Large split dies

Sometimes I need big split dies to repair things like axle threads. Talking M18-M24.

I was able to find the above, and that's about it. I don't need SAE at all, which made some of the stuff for bigger trucks pointless as 1/2 of the set or more is SAE.

This started with a search for an M22x1.50 split die, as I had a seized axle shaft I had to beat out of a hub with a 498 air hammer. Mushroomed it a bit, and I fixed it with thread files and a NES external thread chaser, wasn't great. Point being I really need a two piece die, not a regular one.

I did that similar event with a thread plate, but I've never seen a metric version. Got it close enough to get a regular die on it.


Do they make metric axle re threading dies?


Just looking for other names for the same thing.

I've cut a large die nut into 2 halves and clamped them together with 2 small spacers (to compensate for the material I had cut out) around a good section of the thread to be cleaned up and wound it back out.
(ensure the 2 halves are fitted the right way around to cut correctly)

I was going to say, we have done this at work and didn't bother with the spacers. Just cut it in half, and spun it out with a socket.

Yep, I’ve done it to the end of a dirt bike crankshaft. Start of the thread was mangled but halfway down was fine. Split the die, wrap it around the thread halfway down and wind it back out.

Issue is these are axles, with key ways cut in the end to stake the nut. The keyway is about the total thickness of an M22 sized die which makes the whole thing of two pieces a bit harder. Even my split dies will jam up sometimes thus I'm concerned the loose fitting cut in half die won't cut.

Adding a chamfer to the end will sometimes "eat" your total length of mushroomed metal but you need enough meat left to do so. Like in the picture above removing more than 2 or 3 threads will take you into the engagement area where torque is being applied.

I may buy a die and chop it with a cut off wheel just to try, or buy the cheapo set I linked.
