When I saw this large square at the swap meet I was blown away. I’d never seen one like it and it brought me back to my log house building days. The long leg is 32".

I knew it wouldn’t be that useful on a log building site because logs just aren’t that square but just the thought of having it sitting on the site would be worth it. Actually now in hind sight there are many things that have to squared on log buildings where this square would really shine. After I bought it and was walking around with it a few guys commented on it being a glaziers’ square. I didn’t like the sound of that although I could see the possibility.

I scoured it with soap and a scotchbrite pad and polished up the brass a bit as it was so faded and dirty. This is all I dared do as I didn’t want to weaken the markings.

It's a Lufkin!

I treated the extremely dry wood with BLO.

It made me unhappy at the time because I perceived it to be associated with some type of carpentry which was more in line with my past and possible intended use. It is what it is though so I'll still be happy having it on a wood workers job site. What's really made me unhappy now is your link to the catalog where on page 144 it shows they were available up to 60" long! (mines only 32"):

Seriously though RTM, thanks for the link and info, it's nice to know the straight goods on it and I'll remain happy with it now regardless.
Thanks for the kind words everyone, I'll have to rub it down as I let the BLO dry without rubbing it in. I'll get it looking real good eventually.

Likely for art/picture frames

Our family had a frame shop/art gallery. This is what we used. It lacked measurements. Had to use a separate tape for that. When we closed a few years ago dad used them for his rc modeling. Upon his passing I got them.

We have several. The big one is just too big for most uses.

WOW! Mine's not phenolic but your link took me to the Canadian Amazon where the price is a whopping $607!!!!!!

RTM's link to the Lufkin catalog clearly defines them a Glacier's Square. These phenolic ones look like modern copies and sold in the picture framing industry.

(See RTM, this is how to make a guy feel real happy;) (I paid $20 for my old wooden one:giggle:)

I saw those high prices too. To think my brother didn’t want them.

Thought the prices would cheer you up. Makes a great walk hanger in the shop.

My grandfather was a carpenter. His Lufkin folding ruler was a source of wonder as a young kid. I have it now.
