What is everyone using for brand of large wrenches from say 1 3/8" up to 2" or even up to 2 1/2"? I'm needing some larger wrenches for work that will only be used ocassionally so i'm not trying to break the bank on these.

Guess I should specify that i'm looking for combination wrenches.

I bought the HF set on sale and a coupon, they were like 36 bucks. They have worked OK, no issues.

I was thinking about the HF ones but I don't like raised panel wrenches. I guess since I wont be using them much it shouldn't be that big a deal. The 6 piece set is on sale for 49.99 and there's a 20% discount coupon for this hoilday weekend so should only run $40 and tax.

TSC has the sizes you need at the price you want.

afterthaught, im sure they are raised panel as well, but at just over 10 bux each, you can't go wrong. plus the panel makes the shaft stronger lol

What do you need wrenches that big for? If you have high torque applications (or even full torque) I doubt you could rely on HF. If you don't need the torque, consider knipex plier wrenches. Otherwise, I'd get Proto at least. I'd probably get old raised panel craftsman before I'd choose HF.

My issue with HF or other China tools would be the quality of the tool steel and processing. Tools that big, could have problems smaller tools don't. Hard to heat treat big items. Thru heat and quenching specifically.

Also, the cost high quality tool steel would be significant for a big wrench. This would be a tempting potential cost savings for Chinese manufacturers to substitute lower quality materials to increase profit. ("quality fading" is typically done over time, but it could also be done for larger sized, infrequently used tools.)

Northern tool has large wrenchs that aren't raised pattern. Imported but satin chrome and decent quality. They have most sizes in 1/16" increments.

I've got the HF sets,, both sate and metric, along with some swap meet specials, probably Blackhawks.

What you need probably depends on what you will be using them for. Hydraulic fittings are large, but low torque, so high strength and cost tools are senseless.

I find that the larger the tool, the less important precision is.

What are the large wrenches needed for? You couldn't get a socket in there instead?

These are the ones I would look at if I were buying.

they've held up to sledgehammer abuse all these years. none broekn, but i did manage to bend the 1 1/2" @ the box end.

A mix of Williams, Proto, and C-Man. I pick them up used as I find them hedging bets against future needs. I also have some large (1 1/2+) crows feet I picked up cheap which can be used as an OE wrench in a pinch.

I have craftsman professional up to 1-1/2" that I purchased NOS from a seller on ebay. My large metric is a combination of Armstong, Allen, Kobalt that I purchased from Cripe.

Reasonable price for all new USA made tools. Of course I haven't used many of them as I don't run across large fasteners but its nice to have the tools if I need them.

I picked up a set of Wrights from 1 3/8 to 2 1/2 last year for $350 from a flea market seller.

If you don't need them RFN, suggest you shop around a bit and see what you can find used or NOS before you buy the Northern Tool or Harbor Freight ones.

My home ones are mostly a mix of sk, older armstrong, and a few snap, all used since i dont need over 1 1/4 too often. I also recently picked up a handful of large Husky metric wrenches from Home depot on a sale they were having, that im actually impressed with for the price.

at work, its armstrong in the 1"-2" sizes and proto from mid 1" into mid 3", sizes after that we had our machine shop cut them out of plate. we also have a no name raised panel japan set from 1" to 2 1/2" that are pretty stout.

I do lots of hydraulic fittings and also need to remove some large 1 7/8" plugs for hydraulic tanks. Yes I could use a socket IF I had one that large but if I need to buy something I would rather buy wrenches as the length to get into some places is also needed but nothing high torque for sure.

I ended up buying the HF 6 piece set for $43 out the door after sale and coupon.

I had a proto set similar to that on my area about 6 months ago and they wanted like 2200$

15 big wrenches, 23 sockets, 1 ratchet, 1 breaker bar, 2 extensions,(best I can make out) 1 nice box = 43 pieces divided into $800 makes each piece slightly under $19 (18.60).....not to bad if you needed them, but the freight to the west coast would be the deal breaker....

Northern tool mostly, followed by Williams superrench and one Armstrong. I also have two Sunex angle wrenches (1-1/2 & 2") that are decent for china made.

Local flea markets have tons of them as not too many people buy those large wrenches. I have seen S-K Williams,Proto,Craftsman and many others USA made and sellers usually asks couple dollars each. Not a big market for them.
