Looking at building again in the future. I heard you get it right by the 4th time but this will only be our 3rd time. So I'm curious how large of an attached garage have people done? Any photos or threads on here to read? I know there are threads that debate attached vs. detached shops, but I like the convience of being close to the house. Also curious how you divide up car parking space and shop space.

Biggest I have seen is a 4 car attached on a normal house. It has 16' ceilings, so it could theoretically be an 8 car garage. I sometimes wish I had bought it.

best that I have seen is a 40x 100 pole barn built on a lot in the country by me. had a weird looking front with a large and a small roll up doors. then 2 years later he built a large side split house with the same roof line as the front of the pole barn. looks amazing and you cannot tell that they were but at different times. barn is insulated and steel sided on inside with infloor heating ( wood furnace).

My best friend built a house with a 4 car on one side (2x2), 2 post lift, 3rd roll up door and kickout for the tractor. 4 car on the other side is all in a row, 10 foot walkway, so a superduty backed to the bump with a hitch on leaves room for a stroller or his dad's wheelchair to get by. I don't remember for sure, but I think he said all in is 2200' of garage/shop. All 14' ceilings, so plenty of room for storage up high if he runs out down low.

Just started the process of getting the plans drawn up for mine. Preliminary check by my architect with the city said we are good to go.

38x48x12. Code here is that detached structures can only be 40% the size of the residence. No limit on attached so attached it is.

Subscribed. Also kicking the tires on building a house. Terrified of the not getting it right part and we're earlier in the four stages of building part than you. Still living in our starter home after 12 years. Didn't build it so this will be our first.

I have approximately 4800 sq ft of attached garage. our building department's objection was fire related. We overcame that with fire sprinklers and increased thickness of drywall on the lid and walls that abutted living spaces.

My neighbor a few houses down has a 50x100 attached garage. Part of it is a basketball court.

While not that much square footage, I have a traditional two car attached garage, and then a garage addition was built off the side of the house...........roughly 1000 square feet

Almost like a finished "lean to"

Long and narrow shop, about 63' x 16'

You have to start some where. Not to scare anyone off, but each time you learn from the previous experience. What works, what doesn't etc. On your various walk throughs, where to put outlets, switches, network, cable, run smurf tube, what is cheaper to upgrade now, like garage floor drains, basement plumbing, kitchen island that is one height vs two, etc. rather than think we'll come back in a year and do this upgrade etc. You also learn a lot just by living in the house vs. looking at a floor plan.

A couple houses ago - I had a 2-story 30x40 on one end of the house and a 24x26 at the other. This was my favorite setup. My wife parked in the small garage with the boat and the yard stuff. I parked in the large garage with my 4-wheelers, motorcycles, truck and other stuff. I never had to go outside to go get a tool from the detached garage to do something in the house. It was a great setup - in the middle of a subdivision. I have more garage space now but I spend a lot of time walking between garages depending on whether I'm working in the house or the garage.

My previous house had an attached 50x75 garage. In order to be near the house it had to be attached so I built it with a carport between the house and garage. worked pretty well.
