If using for impacts/truck nut busting/torque down, etc.. WHich means short trigger times. What would be the highest CFM compressor you would put on a 30-35 gallon tank? Impact would be something like a 1/2" TMAX or maybe a 3/4" for rare nut use.. I know the IR259 or IR261 uses 3/8 hose just a FYI.. It is my understanding that the full potential of any impact is way above the rated av use of say 5+/- CFMS.. If i could use a 10/12 CFM pump I would be happy.. Hmmm a quincy 325 on a 3 gallon tank lol..

Reason is for portability on the tank.. If moving it/etc from place to place.. I know the compressor will be heavy but a 60 gallon tank just makes things worse..

You could run with no tank if you had a proper unloader valve. If you look at the portable engine or PTO powered pumps the tank is usually smaller than fixed compressors. So putting a large pump head on a small receiver is doable.

You need to know the rating of your tank.
If it is used, old and may have thin spots form rust I would not but bery much. 30 gallon tanks should not have a rating over 150psi. I have owned a few small compressors with that rating. Not the standandards are high. They make them to hold at leat 3 times that in testing befoe they go to market.

they all have pressure relief vlaves. That is a must. The limit switch can be set. It is a pressure activated switch. You can set it to turn off the compressor at any limit.

There is no point to put a large compressor head on a small tank.
Good used compressors come up all the time for a few hundred dollars. I have seen at least 9 60 gallon compressors for under $300 on Craigs list in the past month. One compressor and tank was free. The compressor was ceased up. The tank, motor and all were good. It is sitting inmy shop for one of my grandsons to pull apart.

It is fun to build thing but it usualy cost more to put a compressor together than it is worth unless you have all the parts on hand.

.

1. There are many small tanks rated into the hundreds of pounds. It is just not common on a cheap air compressor.

2. As the OP stated he wants portability, great reason for a small tank.

RC I have yet to read one of your posts that does not contain one or more completely wrong bit of information. Please make sure of your "facts" before you post.

Well a quincy 216 for one! rated at 10.70 and can do 125 psi just fine. But I may just find a 325 and be done with it.. When the time comes put it on a 60 gallon.. Just talked to a wonderful compressor/hydraulic shop that deals with quincy all the time.. To keep the setup happy can run the compressor on cont. mode but "unloaded" to keep the motor from start/stop mode.. Thats is when pump not tweeking the PSI... After 30 mins or so when I am done just shut it down..
