I have been in the playing with cars since before getting a drivers license. Some of my first work was done in the driveway at the folks place. We bought our first house with a 1 ½ car garage some 30+ years ago. I worked out of that garage for 10 years till I was able to afford a better building that was a 30x36’ pole building. Man it was huge. Fast forward to about 3 years a go when life dealt us a change and it meant moving my father in with us. We could not accommodate him in our house and we could not live in his so we replaced an old rental house on the farm with a 40x70 manufactured home. Also in the build was a new shop of 48x36’. I will share some of the shop build here. This is a shop that will do work and will not be a fancy show place that some have, but hopefully will work for me and my needs. I have basically 4, 12’x36’ bays. The left 2 bays have OH doors that allow equipment/rigs in. The next bay is dirty workshop where welding/grinding and other stuff happen. There is a full wall separating the last bay from the rest of the shop. That bay is the machine shop and clean area covered with a loft that is for the wife to have as a craft room and storage. I have a 200 amp electrical service to the shop with a phase converter to make 3 phase for the machines. There is still a lot to do in the shop to get it finished. A bunch more electrical and air plumbing. Storage areas have to be build and the machine shop closed in. The opening showing under the stairs into the shop is getting a false wall and there will be a man door at the bottom of the stairs. Thing are moving ahead in microleaps as father now requires almost full time care and I am the primary caregiver.

The kit is onsite and the poles going in. The county requireda 2' dia x 4' deep hole. Each hole has 6" of concrete in the bottom then the pole on top.

Preped for concrete. In the picture you can see the conduit for the electrical and the two extra posts that will eventually hold the loft floor. These posts also do not have trusses as they would obstruct the door that is planned. Pouring the concrete and then the back wall tin up. The last picture showes the use of both traditional and commerical (Flat) girts. I used the commercial in the clean shop area so insulating and finish would be easier.

Looking good, Larry! I know it's been a tough road for you trying to take care of an ailing parent, along with trying to live your own life, as I've been there. Building a shop and doing the care thing takes a lot out of a man. Good going.

I have some time to get back to the posting of pictures. It seems a huge effort form me to get pictures found and organized forthis post. Any way I will put up some of the interior picts and the mess that I have had to work with. As soon as the shell was up it started filling with stuff. During this build I also had to clear out fathers house, and our old house so that they could be rented. So a lot ofthe **** ended up in my building. So a lot of the last year it was storage of 'stuff' until it could be disposed of or allocated back to the children.

These pictures show the installation if the lights and preliminary wiring. Enough wiring to get the final inspection done and the county requirements finished.

This set of pictures shows the loft going in. The loft will be for family stuff and under the loft is the machine shop. The middle picture shows the man door to the right.

Here we have the loft room being finished with a window, the carpet being lifted into the room, and the finished room. Color and paint choices were hers.

The first picture shows the wall that divides the clean area from the open shop area. Second is the storage wall. I built this from 2x10 lumber and eventually I will close one side or the other if the studs making shelf units that either face the shop or machine room. Third picture is of the opening for the false wall under the stairs. This opening will be used for moving machines in and out of the machine shop. I will close it up with a wall that can be removed if necessary on the infrequent times a big piece is moved.

Installing a workbench/storage/guard in front of the stairs. The bench is 4x6 framing, 2x12 top, with a laminated 3/4" top. I have a cart that is6'longthat will just fit under the bench and roll under the stairs. It will eventually be for storage of metal shorts. The bench goes from built to mess in about 24 hours. I think **** moves around the shop at night while I'm not there to protect the flat surfaces. The last is a bit of color looking out the man door toward the house. and back of the property.

After more than 2 years from the first pictures in this thread I am finally able to move the machines and good stuff from the old shop. I rented a drop deck trailer that made things real easy to roll on and off. First picture is of the machine shop area cleaned out and mostly ready to receive the equipment. Second and third are of the trailer in use and some of the stuff moving.

So the little mill comes through the door, into the clean area, to rest in its spot. This mill is an Index model 40 that came out of a reserch lab. It is about 2/3 the size of a bridegeport and stout as hell.

A 13", and a 10" Sheldon lathe coming in and in their final resting place till further notice.

This is the big mill. It was to heavy to pick up so we levered it up and bolted it to skids. It was winched onto the trailer and drug off with the backhoe. It was levered down onto home made rollers and manuvered into its temp spot till cabinets and other items get into the machine shop and then I will decide if it goes into the clean area orstays in the open shop.

So this is the shop as it sets today. There is lots of opprotunity for cleaning and arranging. I do hope that you have enjoyed the pictures and I will hopefully have some soon that show the mess gone and the shop in working order. It has been a long two years and a long way to go. This week has been spent getting the 3-phase converter installed, wired and getting the machines powered up.

The eve is at 14' with a 4/12 pitch roof. So that puts the peak at ~20'.

Tks... We have a 5th wheel that is 12' 6" to the top of the AC and it looks like I will have to go a full 16' up if we build to fit that monster under the door....

Its not out of the question to have a stepped roof or one bay that is higher. My old shop was a 10' eve on 2 bays then up to 14' for the last one.

What size are the O/H doors? Since you have had to meet county inspections, how, where (or who) did you get the truss/post/structural design? What is the vinyl covered material between the steel siding and the girts? What is the floor thickness? And last question for now .... are you planning to install any heating system?

Since you have had to meet county inspections, how, where (or who) did you get the truss/post/structural design? I bought the building as a kit from a local pole building vendor. They set down with me and we worked out the design and they drew up the drawing set, their engineer stamped the truss design, and they got the building permit. I put the responsibility on them to go through the building permit process and deliver it before the materials. They are http://www.mwbsc.com/ and I recommend them.

What is the vinyl covered material between the steel siding and the girts? It is called insulated vapor barrier. It is 2" of fiberglass insulation on the plastic backing. It comes in 6' wide rolls.

And last question for now .... are you planning to install any heating system? I have tubing in the floor for radient heating in part of the building. I'm to old to go out in freezing weather so I'm only heating the machine shop area.

Been a while since I've got much done in the shop. Father is still taking a lot of time as well as other things. I did get the false wall built and installed as well as most of the wall board up in the machine shop area.The first two picture are before and after from the main shop area adn the 3&4 are from the machine shop area. The false wall is secured by a few screws and removing the screws and sliding the wall out of the way will allow the passage of machines in and out of the area. I don't expect to do that often so that is why I did not go with a hinged door.

Next is to get the 'storage wall' finished as well as the wiring covered along the top of the wall in the machine shop area. I have the wiring in a recess made but the use of a 4" thick beam and a 6" wall and top plate. A cover will conceal/protect the wiring.

The shop is looking good! Couple of electrical questions ... what amp service do you have to your panel? How are you feeding the shop panel (separate meter? breaker in house panel? double-tap off load side of existing meter?)? What size and type of cable is supplying your panel? Is it overhead or underground?

I have 200A feeding the shop. When I was developing the property I had a 400A service brought in to the meter base which has 2 200A breakers, one for the house and one for the shop. The meter panel also has 8 or 10 slots for regular breakers which I used for a feed to the well pump and outlets for construction power. I can't tell you what cable was used as I had that done by an electrical contractor. It is brought in underground to the interior of the shop. So far that idea has worked for me as I can get out of the breaker box and run to either side of the shop.

As for work I am semi-retired so most of the time I am here caring for an aging father. I spent my working career as a maintenace man for a hi-tech manufacturing company.

I live on a farm so the 'rigs' can be anything from the crawler and backhoe seen in the early pictures to trucks, pickups, and anything else that rolls in. I have built hotrods in the past and may again, I don't know. I have spent some years working to get the machine shop acquired and running. In addition I aspire to build some model engines as a hobby.

If you look in post 12 you will see the window going into the upstairs room.

Thanks Larry. With the equipment you're putting in there I would have guessed you were a machinist, mechanic, or something along that line. I wish I had time to play with "toy's" like you've got there!

Darn I missed that window in my first go round.

I like the idea of the movable wall. I could use that one!
