The garage has been used for many "get-togethers" with the local BMW club. The garage has hosted a number of "tech sessions", usually associated with SEMA week in Las Vegas. Will Turner of Turner Motorsports fame is probably the most famous person who has been in the garage -- he gave a nice presentation on how he started his business from the trunk of his car and has turned it into the professional race team shop and BMW maintenance shop. Amazing story (and a really nice guy).

VERY COOL! I used to see those guys all the time at Limerock before I moved. They're a class act bunch of guys. I loved how his McLaren (I assume it was his) was all muddy parked by the team's racecars in the pits.

Ok, so I have an small update on my garage. I finally finished refurbishing two vises I got in two bins of stuff at auction.

Since i have a really, really nice stainless steel top on one of my work benches, I only want to drill three holes, no more! So where should I mount the Wilton C-1? To me, it seems on the front corner of the bench so that as you look at the bench, the vise will be at your left. This way I can swivel it out of the way when I am not using it.

Do you place the ears of the swivel base right up to the edge or do you have it so the vise nose will just clear the bench top so you can turn the handle w/o mashing fingers?

I decided to keep my old Craftsman workbench, mount it on some casters, and use it as a rolling work table. I will mount the Charles Parker 434-1/2 vise on it where my cheapy chinese Craftsman vise used to be.

I'd appreciate feedback on mounting the vises!

Here are before/after pics of the two vises for your viewing pleasure:

Of course I been tryin to think of how to do overhead cabinets that are too close to the door tracks to open.... sliding doors! Thanks!!

My pleasure! The sliding doors are fantastic. Get good door hardware, even though it is somewhat expensive.

nice work! i have a wilton c1!

Thanks!

Beautiful!

Thanks Jack! I might frame your post -- a GJ "celebrity" and fellow track junkie offering praise for my pedestrian work is very welcome!

I forgot to mention that the Wilton vise was frozen solid when I got it. Lots of time in the electrolysis tank fixed that. I still need to get a freeze plug or wheel bearing dust cap for the end plug. I've been told that chain link fence post caps will work with some grinding (I don't have a grinder though...).

Mounted the Charles Parker vise up yesterday. Still have to figure out where I want the Wilton on the workbench.

One of my favorite garages!

You have excellent taste! ;)

Thanks for the kind words.

I need to post up some new pics as I have the vises mounted, labels on the drawers of the Listas, and a couple of new cabinets made from my scrap materials.

I'll put it on my weekend "to do" list.

Have missed reading your thread. Looking forward to the new projects you completed for your garage.

Happy New Year!

Ok, so I took some pics of where I'm at now. Sorry for the long delay but I just got a bunch of this done!

First up are the two new cabinets that sit right above my recycle containers and trash can. THese were built entirely out of scrap materials. My friend took the dimentions of the materials I had left over and went to work on Google Sketch Up again. They hold my central vac hoses and attachments, large box of trash bags, and my bench sweep and dust pan. Please excuse the bags of trash, cardboard boxes, and the attic ladder in the pic. Lots of stuff to put out on the curb this week!

Drawers in the Lista cabinets now have labels on them. I also mounted two paper towel holders under the upper cabinets. In addition, I hung the two nice red metal cabinets that I had before on the side wall. I store my brake cleaner, oil, penetrating oil, etc. in the lower one. The upper one has car repair manuals and other garage equipment manuals. I rarely use these unless it's a major project, so they went up top!

You can see the restored Wilton vise on the left front of the workbench. I am really happy with the results of all the work I put into that vise! It works like a dream now. You can also see the outlet strip that I mounted on the wall under the upper cabinets. Now I can charge all my stuff at once instead of having to wait for a plug to open up! I have my sharpening system (adhesive backed sand paper on a super smooth substrate) clamped to the workbench. I need to sharpen two old planes I have as well as clean up the bottom of the shoes on both of them. I'm still on the first two grits, so a long ways to go! Clearly, I have some cable management issues to deal with as I don't like them showing under the work bench, but that's a bit down the list of things to do.

I put the Charles Parker on my old Sears Workbench that I mounted on small casters. I took the back panel off the workbench so I can use it from either side. Oh, before one of you guys gives me grief about the length of the bolts I used to mount the Charles Parker, they were what I had on hand and I haven't taken the time to trim them yet. Lots of little things still to do...

Thanks Don. I do like the RaceDeck. It's not as easy to keep clean as the epoxy before it was, but it doesn't chip up like the epoxy before it... The 'clack' noise walking on it isn't an issue for me, but it is for some I guess.

I do not plan on any more build outs. I need to still put the backsplash up behind where the sink will go. I also need to fix some drywall cracks and paint the ceiling and the front and lift side walls. Scored a special on Angie's list for the drywall repair and 8 hours of painting (I supply the paint) for $249. Yeah, I know we are supposed to DIY but to be honest, I really, really, really hate painting. Second only to chasing Christmas light string problems on a prelit Christmas tree (don't ask...). :willy_nil

The big item is replacing my 27" Tube TV's (old ones from the living room and master suite) with a flat screen. Need a big honking swivel mount to hold the old HDTV so I need to find that first. Super bowl sales are just around the corner though! :D I'll likely wait a year, but you never know!

Here's what happens when Martha Stewart drops by the garage...

Fresh white satin paint on walls and ceiling. Then the display monkey arrived and put up some of our racing hardware.

Some race/autocross plaques as well as a hint of my new lights (dual 4' T8 fixtures -- I put 5 of these up this spring).

Race winning flags/trophies. When I get my new garage doors the track will be moved up a lot higher so it won't obstruct the view. As a side benefit I'll have to put in a LiftMaster GDO -- woe is me...).

Sorry about the fuzzy pic below. I'll run by it slower next time I take a photo....

European delivery license plates as well as the Nevada Atomic Testing Museum specialty plate (don't miss this museum when you come to Vegas -- just east of the strip on Flamingo).

Have missed reading about the "goings-on" in your garage. Good to read you are still at it!

Best,

Ody.

Thanks Ody!

I've done less than I've wanted to but I've still done a few things. I've been negligent adding photos and descriptions up. I have at least one clever solution that I need to share. Well, I think it is clever anyways. I'll post that up soon.

Great thread, and great garage! I have some cheaper cabinets my wife had installed in the garage years ago, with doors that open out. I had thought about painting them and getting some sliding doors. Yours are making me think more about it. I park my car pretty close to them (back it in), so I have plenty of room when I get out. Sliding doors would allow me some access and look better IMO.

Great job, on the vises too! I think I'm going to just get a HF vise for now, something to hold me over while I search for a nice vise like a Wilton.

Thanks for posting, good read.

I missed this one in my readings. It's looking great. I really like the cabinets with sliding doors. One comment/question: for a 16" deep cabinet, 2 door depth (6"?) seems like a big adder of depth. Did you think about going with 3/4" material for the sliding doors and does that h/w exist? Again, looks really good. I'd like to copy, but don't want to give up too much depth as I'll be going with 20-24" deep cabinets.

Thanks.

Here's the promised "clever solution" -- goes all the way back to my first thread on GJ -- storing wheels and tires.

I used 2" x 2" angle iron, put radiuses on the ends, and then bolted it to my old Craftsman workbench. I had to add larger casters so the tires would easily clear the floor, but it turned out pretty well. Having four wheels/tires on the bench has an added benefit of stabilizing it a bit with all that mass down low.

I'm sure you could hang 3/4 sheet there, but the doors are lighter and cheaper. They didn't eat up that much as they aren't that thick. Maybe 1.75" each door so it's really not a problem.

Just checking in . Its been about 6 or 8 months and the place is looking great
Love the big wilton. How is the floor holding up? I still need to pull the trigger on something for my garage.

You keep posting, and we will keep watching, and commenting occasionally.

Thanks

If your interested, i know others would be if you were to take some shots from a bit farther back in the garage to gain more perspective of the overall. Just my two cents. I know i saw mention of a lift but i just caught a glimpse of an arm in one pic.

Floor is holding up well. I've abused it with brake fluid, antifreeze, diff fluid, trans fluid, etc. It just wipes right up with no effect to the floor at all.

I guess I should take a pic from further out. Haven't really thought of it, but with the new lights I should do a night and a day shot.

Unfortunately, it's just been too hot to mess with stuff so the garage is a bit of a pit. I'll keep you all in suspense until the weather cools down a bit. Sorry.

This weather has been brutal... I picked the hottest month here in July to build my new bench... And it took longer than I expected... Can't wait for the winter (((but then I might complain it's too cold to paint stuff in the garage or I'll have to preheat whatever I am welding etc. )))

Also don't forget if you wanna get rid of that Wilton or any of those lista cabinets I'm local so you won't have to worry about shipping

Yeah well, I live in the Phoenix, AZ area...so I can totally relate to your issues with the heat. I tore down my transmission two nights ago, at around 10pm at night, and it was a sweat fest.

Back on topic, I'm looking forward to seeing more pics. Great garage! I SO would like to get racedeck.. perhaps one of these years.

I'd sell the Wilton, but Fort Knox is probably closed right now so no way you can get enough gold to me in time... :lol_hitti I have too much fun *invested* in that one, plus the history of the vise being used at the Nevada Test Site = priceless!

The Lista's are super nice. It's worth it to get some from Motorhead Extraordinaire. I waited over a decade to get mine. Should have gotten some so much sooner vs. all the various **** boxes I bought which I thought were great at the time (didn't know better).

Yeah, that Wilton is sweet! How much junk did you get in that bin that the vises came in? Was it a good deal at least? :)

And every time I see your garage (and a few of the others with race deck), the more I want it..

So how's the heat treating you?

I recycled many hundreds of pounds of "scrap" steel from those bins. I have more than paid back the cost of the items, the rental of the trailer, and the gas driving back and forth by selling the pipe wrenches, the jack, etc. I gave the bottle jack to a young painter that did most of the painting in my garage (as a tip, his truck didn't have a jack and he was a nice kid). I think I even recovered the cost of the paint and electricity to do all the electrolysis. So essentially the Wilton and Reed vises just cost me a bunch of hours of free time. :rocker:

The heat *****, though it finally broke yesterday. We received about 25% of our annual rainfall in a little over an hour. :scared: Nice and muggy now, but at least it is cooler.

Sounds like the price was right! :) Nice job!

As for heat and rain, I know the feeling.. damn it's been a hot summer. The rain has been nice over the past week or so. It has been too hot for me to get out in the garage and do much. Every time I get out and do anything, I sweat like crazy.

Oh man Nevada test site? you probably don't know this but there is a very very good chance that there is some radiation on that vise.... I strongly recommend you get rid of it... and it can be quite expensive to dispose of radioactive items like that... can I ask how's your hair? have you noticed any thinning? or do your teeth have any sensitivity?

I would be happy to come and remove that Vise and dispose of it for you free of charge neighbor

I believe in 'hormesis', the beneficial result of radiation exposure.

Besides, it provides a free night-light in the garage.

It's no one's fault but mine for the lack of activity in this thread...

Thanks! It was a lot of work, but it works very, very well. No issues at all other than I wish I'd have used gloss paint on the doors...me and my fingerprints.

I am REALLY liking your Lista toolboxes! Do you happen to have a model number for those?

Yeah, the Lista's are a whole different level of cabinet from the stuff I had before. The full extension drawers are super nice. No regrets on buying them.

I don't recall the model numbers but I think they are the SC series of cabinets. Drawers are 24" x 24". They are a bit tall for a workbench, but I'm over 6' tall so it's no problem.

I bought them here: Motorhead Extraordinaire Super easy to work with and the price was very good since mine are "junk yard dogs". Have to work hard to find any cosmetic defects though.

Looks great! Love the Euro delivery plates on the wall. I have been hanging onto motorcycle and a few car plates, never though to display them.

In TX we have front/rear required plates, but my wife has been driving the 1 for a couple years now with the Euro plate up front. She has been pulled over 3 or 4 times for it (one cop even asked if he could take a picture), but never gotten a ticket for it. (knock on wood). I told her I would put the state plate on if she wanted, but until a ticket arrives, I doubt that day will come.

It's about time this thread popped back up... I don't know why our 100+ degree weather is slowing down your garage activities? I mean, if you don't plan on using that vice.. you should let me borrow it, neighbor :)
Or at least babysit it.
