Latex Paint problems

Hey all

Googled all over the net but didn't find much on this...

After much nagging from the wife I resumed work on the new master bath today... primed ceilings and walls last weekend, painted ceiling Monday night, and taped it off this afternoon and got ready to cut in the walls and roll em.

Noticed while brushing the edges that the paint was a little thick, and on a second stroke paint was moving and literally looking like it had been applied by daubing. Decided to try rolling some and again on second roll instead of filling in the voids it left lots of bare streaked areas. I thinned the paint a little with water and it was a little better but still almost unuseable.... Walls were clean, NEW sheetrock, two coats of dry primer, no dust.

Any ideas ? I am waiting for this mess to dry and see how horrible the splotches look after fully drying. Upscale Glidden paint ...It was a closeout at the Depot and looked and smelled fine when they tinted it for me.

I have painted at least a hundred rooms over my seventy years and have never seen this....

I've never had this problem with glidden but dealt with something similar with valspar (the most evil paint made) from lowes. Since it was on closeout id imagine they knew the batch had issues. Id take it back and buy behr.

Not familiar with the brand, but guess you could have had a bad batch. FYI.. use floetrol, not water for "thinning" latex paint.

Noticed you are in Cape Cod. Were the walls exterior ones? I have had a few issues with cold walls causing paint to run or thin areas.

Hey all

Primer was the same for ceiling and walls, ceiling final coat went fine. Probably eliminates primer.

Thanks for the tip on Flotrol... I will get some for next time but got to say I have never ever had to thin latex for rolling before.

Inside walls, warm and dry inside.

Will probably just bring the three "deal" gallons back today and swap for a different brand....

Anyone want to sand some walls ?

Thanks

Was this the so-called "Paint and Primer" style? Seems most of the box stores are moving toward pushing/selling only this type. I hate it. It's too thick and becomes unworkable too fast. It's 'advantage' is supposed to be better hiding with fewer coats. I just find it to be generally low performance and I believe it is actually a cost cutting measure by the paint manufacturers. They get to add more low cost filler as the 'primer' component, and skimp on the costly pigments and resins.

I've got a bunch of interior wood trim painted with Valspar semi gloss latex that hasn't cured yet after 6 months. Still gummy. Will probably have to strip it all and start over.

No...good quality separate primer coat (killz) followed by what should have been an easy on color coat...second roll on the color coat literally took half of the first roll off and left splotches and a mess everywhere. First and only time I have ever seen it in 50 years of home maintenance.

The ceiling topcoat went on perfect as usual, must be the wall paint that is bad. I'm going to let it all dry over the weekend and sand the globs off . I don't anticipate any problem returning the paint to the Depot they have always been fair in my dealings with them.

We had a problem with exterior paint, the parts that got painted with in a couple of days of primer were fine. The ones the next week failed (peeled) Might be something similar too long after the primer?
