It depends on the gears involved and the machine. If the back gears, bull gear or spindle pick off gear are damaged then you'll probably have to make new ones or repair the existing gears. These would, in most cases, be machine-specific gears.

Change gears can usually be made up from standard gear blanks available from any one of several gear manufacturer's catalogs.

Check the width, bore and pitch of the ones that are on there. You might find that gears from an Atlas, Logan or South Bend will fit. They're readily available, but not usually cheap.

I've sold a ton of South Bend gears on eBay and people frequently ask for measurements... I'm assuming that it's because they want them for non-South Bend lathes.
