Lathe tools, what are they worth?

Good afternoon.

I got lucky getting nice old collection on Monday (https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=387904).

While I will keep the interesting tools and restore some nice looking antiques, I have a small box which came full of lathe tools. Mostly unmarked or with some codes on them, others have some names (put them in the picture). I do not have any lathe and do not need them.

Can anybody advise me what they might be worth? (I did not clean them - in reality there is less rust on them and more of rust powder from the little box and some junk inside which I threw away).

I am thinking either selling them (if they are worth anything) or exchanging them for some tool or tools.

Just a few weeks ago I saw ads on both CL and Ebay for $3000 for an assortment like that. Local pick up only.

Lelandwelds, thank you for heads up. I am not sure if they sold for that price. If I could sell them for that price, I know what I would get - a nice vintage Snap On (may be even K60/200 if I get lucky - I know, they are not practical, but the Art Deco style is nice....)

I think I will have to wait and see if any other members would shed more light on it. I would prefer to sell them locally (or exchange for tools or tool box) - this is quite a heavy box!

Shelbylex, go to Ebay, search "lathe tool bits" and select Sold Listings. There are quite a few listings. Find some that match your set and compare the prices, minus listing costs, Paypal fees, chance of getting stiffed, and your time and effort for listing. Now you have a baseline price.

$3,000.00 is not a price for used HSS bits, even cobalt. The listing mentioned above was either an exotic material with a high demand, or someone out of touch with reality. I would have to see the Ebay Sold Listing to accept that they sold for that, and it doesn't show up there.

I wouldn't give more than $20 for the lot. Take Larry's offer, its more than fair.

$3000 isn't even in the realm of realistic.

$300 would be outrageous.

$30 is a fair price for someone who can use the tools.

I bought a ton of full boxes of bits at auction 3/16 - 1/2 bet I only paid about $30. After giving some away to a friend I still have a life time supply.

Take the 30 bucks. It’s fair. Hss is not worth the price of a nice used lathe. ($3000)

Unfortunately they are not worth much
You have three holders and the rest are just basic bits
The three holders are worth $5-$10 each depending on condition.
All the other bits are generally found in the dollar bins at most used tool/equipment supply places

I might do $20-$30 on the lot depending on how things look, but I have so much of that stuff already

Thank you for great advises. It really helps. Last time I was making things on a lathe was back in school (we were all required to learn all the basic tools in school as a part of general education, probably from 4th grade...)

I will try to post them on CL and Classifieds section on board to see if anybody in MA or NH will be interested in picking them up for $40 or exchanging them for some interesting tool. If nobody tries, I will lower the price to 30...

larry_g - if they do not sell locally, I will contact you first to see if you still need them. I will try to sell them locally first so that I would not have to bother to mail them and that will also give me the option to exchange it for some other tool).


...$3000 - short, but wonderful thought. Would probably have to wait another 100 years to get to that amount given our inflation : )

Yeah, you could probably expect $40 with the tool holders, I didn't see them at first. I suspect the member who threw that number out either forgot a decimal or was pulling your leg, LOL...
