I am also curious about this. I am looking for a second faster scanner to use with my MODIS.

Buddy at work has one. Has issues. Would not communicate with vehicles. Updated it a couple times. Seems to be better. Honestly my creader 5 works all the time.

Yeah, chalk me up for not thinking Matco (and probably Mac and Cornwell) are selling imaginary code readers as well. ;)

I've been eyeing one for a few weeks and would also like to hear from someone that's put their paws on one. I've been looking to get my own small but robust scanner for a while... we have most of the big players covered with an X431, Matco Pro Scan, and old Solus. I was wanting the OTC, but it's a duplicate of the Pro Scan, OTC's support *****, and I can't stomach Matco's price. Been thinking about either an Autel or CRP129.

The crp129 does oil lights and some other things the 123 don't according to the interweb.

That makes me angry, because the CRP123 was billed as their brand new product and would be regularly supported and upgraded and now for the same price, they already have an updated version and did not push the update to us who just invested in this supposed new product?

I share your feelings. I just bought the CRP123 about 2-3 months ago from Cornwell and if I knew about this I would have just held out. Them bastards.

Same here, same time frame. Cornwell told me this was a newly released product and that they had limited quantities on the first production run. Then all of a sudden this? The unit looks identical, it has to be nothing more than a software update, so why didn't we early adopters get an opportunity to upgrade?

The 129 is a brand new unit. Didn't know a thing about it. A customer showed me, even before something from corporate came out. It's a couple hundred more than the 123. Steering angle reset, electronic parking brake release and oil life monitor reset is what the difference is. Don't know if the 123 can be updated to 129 specs , I'll find out this weekend. Unless the physical hardware is different in the 123, I don't see why it could not be upgraded to 129 specs.

We didn't know anything about the 129 until it was here.

SO what do you recommend for someone who is in the garage twice per month. Oil changes, brakes, that sort of things on my newer cars. I am restoring a couple of older ones but of course no computer use there.

Do you have any you NEED a scanner to reset the oil light/life reading on? FWIW I haven't run into many, the ones I see are usually BMWs and the X431 won't even do those unless I use the special BMW 20-pin. Do you have any Germans with electronic parking brake calipers? Anything you've needed to reset a steering angle sensor on? That seems to be the draw of the 129 over the 123.

Depends on what you want to do and what your budget it. The launch crp123 is a nice tool for the money. No bilateral controls (turn things on and off) and if you want something that will do more the Autel ds708 is the best bang for the buck as far as full function scan tools go. Both are scan tool companies with tech line support if you have an issue with the tool. They don't offer technical help too much but help with the tool. Like I said, what do you want to do and how much you have to spend will determine what you should get.

I paid 299.95 from my Cornwell guy and the 129 is currently available for 299.95 online.

the 123 is $299 from matco and the 129 is $499 from matco. I almost snagged the 123 however knowing how matco works I had a feeling this item could be had much cheaper online. Matco wants more than double the price I found online for the 129.

Always know this. Most of matco and probably cornwell as well, most of their tools are rebranded. Snap on has rebranded tools as well especially on the blue point side. So with items like these before I bite it ill give it a quick look on the net. The last thing I want to do is throw away $100 or more just to get it from the tool truck.

Alright have a few updates for you guys.

The 123 cannot be upgraded to the 129. The hardware will not support it. That's what the tech guys at the show said.

Also, Launch actually owns the business in North America now. What dose that mean to you?

Launch builds their diagnostic equipment for regions of the world. They keep track of it by serial numbers on the tool.

If you buy a tool online and it ships to you from overseas, when you register it to get the updates (free ones or the main line scan tool that you have to buy updates for) it will not work. Nor will launch tech USA be able to give you any support. The tool is not suppose to be over here. That is what the guys I talked to told me. Take it for what that's worth. You can look up the contact info on launchtechusa.com and call them yourself and see what they say if you don't want to take my word. Hopefully they will tell you the same thing.

Same thing I've heard over and over, and the only reason I'll consider paying almost double to get it off the truck. I've heard stories of people buying online and getting one that displays in chinese and being told tough luck, you didn't buy from an authorized dealer. The money's in the software, not the hardware.

Jeep450, they're authorized dealers (well ... some) are carrying a 129 now. They're advertised on Launch Tech USA now too. A lot of changes from launch in the past few weeks.

If i was going to buy one today, id get the 129 hoping it is updated/supported longer as it is a newer unit. And I'd buy through an authorized dealer through Amazon.

I got to use a CRP123 on my 06' Ram 3500 Cummins and it got into ABS, ECM, and a few other things. Definitely made the older Innova 3130 or whatever i used last time seem juvenile.

Its no Snap On Ethos or Solus Pro, but it actually got me AS MUCH, if not more, than the Genisys i have access too that is updated through 2010 Domestic.

For a cheap tool, it does a lot. Now the company ... dont get me started. The 123 i used came with no instructions (on your own to find launch tech usa and figure out how to register and how to update the unit)

Hard to beat for $200. A shame it is Chinese manufacturers.

I just got my CRP129 last night. Haven't had a chance to play with it besides screwing around with it on my truck.

First impressions... holy ****, fix your damn software. Jeebus. I plugged it into the computer first, "some files is missing". It took me about 2 hours to get it to even fire up. You're supposed to let it boot up and get the "register number" to update it. It wouldn't boot even after restoring the firmware on the card. I ended up having to get the registration number from the config file (it's labeled password in there) and do the update to get the firmware from there. Side note, if the card isn't empty the update will stall, so get the registration number, format the card, and install the update to an empty card. No support pisses me off a bit when I spend $500.

Aside from that, seems cool except for not having any battery. I didn't think about that. Every time you have to start or stop the engine, it loses power and reboots. Oh well, I have several more powerful scanners for more advanced stuff, I bought this to keep on my cart for quickies.

If you have any questions I have called Launchtech USA and they have helped me on mine. It is kind of a pain in the *** to update and I have had a little bit of troubles doing it. I don't even update no more. I think I will do it one more time before my 1 year expires.

It would've been no issue if the firmware had been ok, but having to wiggle my way into the product I just bought was some BS.

What worked for me was to get the register code, format the card as NTFS, and run the update including the firmware.

I am test driving the 123 last week and probably buying the 129 this week. When this scanner works its awesome for a quick go to scanner for the basic one way options. But it doesn't always work on every car I had a kia REO that it wouldn't even connect to and a few other cars that it only showed limited data for. My wife's Subaru actually showed 44 didn't pids.

Its got options to check the evap system( I am guessing its turning this stuff on and off or just checking the monitor considering its a one way tool) test o2 sensors and the 129 can monitor abs sensors and clear oil lights which is a plus because in the small shop I am in I get every brand car imaginable.

We have a modus as well buy getting it it is like getting out an old computer and waiting for it to boot up.

I just ordered a scanner (Autel MaxiDAS DS 708) from Tool Warehouse:
http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-18542-diagnostic-scan-tool.aspx

I was going to order from a Chinese site but the guys here changed my mind, pointing out possible problems. See the thread here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=218565

Tool Warehouse gives you a 10% off discount code ($100.00 max.) when you sign up for their email list, their scanners are USA compatible. I was able to order the DS 708 for $1199.00 with free shipping. Check out the site , maybe you can get one you're interested in for a decent price.

It's confirmed. I called launch today. They said besides the tool trucks, only napa carries it. Anybody online isn't authorized to sell and they won't support it. So I'd rather just keep my money and not take the chance.

I am loving this little scan tool (the crp129).

Its very quick for the simple diagnosis. I could even see using it for more complicated jobs but only if it was my only scanner because the small screen does limit what you can see.

I have a few grips with it. It doesn't give the option to select what data you want to view for abs so it's impossible to see if the abs sensors are in sync or not. I'd like the text to be sizable so that I could cram more data on one screen.

Seriously though it's a quick and impressive little scanner.

Were you able to find it through Napa? All I can find in the catalogs are the Cresetter and the big guys, no CRP series.

Kinda a moot point since I bit the bullet and got it from Matco, but curious what it costs from Napa if they have it, since I could've "financed" it through them as well. If you click around on their dealer map there are a handful of others listed, but you'd have to call and see if any would ship one.

Launch does not sell it you have to get it from a supplier. It shows who the supplies are on the launchusa.com website. It also shows the known fake sites.

I see the fake sites but where are the legitimate vendors shown?

Click on "dealers" and it brings up a map, you have to check each state individually. I didn't check every single one, but none of the ones whose sites I visited listed the 129. Might be willing to order you one, though.

im not exactly sure whats going on here but the 123 does srs & abs the website that the op posted states that the 123 does not. if you look at the 129 on the site the description literally is for the 123 and if you click on the 123 it says nothing about abs and srs for the 123.... i own the 123 and its amazing and have never heard of the 129
