Never balanced a blade in my life. If a blade has a chunk out of it causing it to be out of balance then time for a new one. $10 for a new blade is peanuts.
I live in sand country. I buy cheap mower blades and replace what's left of them every year.
Yup. There's a pretty low limit to how much farting around with sharpening mower blades can pay off vs. replacement. And of course the equation can change quite a bit depending on rocks, sand, etc.
Know the cost of replacements, keep some on hand or know where to buy them quickly, and pay attention to the value of your time and effort.
