Yet another problem in the Mitchell household. We just bought a riding mower and the axle popped out of the ******. I think it's a C clip. Its a Simplicity rear engine mower with a hydrostatic drive transaxle. Is this hard to put the clip back on? The guy said it popped out when he was changing a tire. BTW, we only paid $200 for it with the bagger and everything. Just have to get the axle back in and new rear tires. Please help me with this!!

Take it apart and see what there is to see.

Assembly is the reverse of dis-assembly.

Interestingly, I had the same problem on a Simplicity gear transaxle forty years ago. It required disassembly and cutting the groove on the axle a bit deeper with a hacksaw blade. No more trouble after that.

imagesCA5Q51A8.jpg does it look similar to this? if it just popped out changing a tire, it is possibly deformed. get it back on the axle, lay it on a bench and with a small hammer tap around the circumference of the clip, put the axle back in, (might take a bit of force) and see if it will stay. You might take a good look at the seal beforehand as well.

Alright so I took the whole thing off and popped the axle back in. Then I couldn't get it out!!! Thought it was locked in for good because my cousin is a mechanic and said it was good. Re lubed and oiled ****** and put it back together. Worked great!! Until the axle came back out!!! There were no clips or any metal pieces in the transmission and doesn't look like you can get a clip on the axle in there. How can I solve this??
