We are just out of Halloween and our sign suffered a little from the rain.

Not to worry, I will organize a more permanent sign for next years. This started me googling for people that make LED lawn signs ... as it turned out, not a huge market.

Ok, change of attack. What do I need for an LED lawn sign? Hmm ... LEDs? Great start! This lead me to a light box ... that is something that I can do. All weather - yep. Frosted acrylic / perspex for max light diversion - yep.

But still no answer on getting the lettering. I emailed signs.com and they say NO to light box, but YES to decal for light box.

Ok ... now I am making a light box that has no actual sign on the front but can take any and all other signs that I want to put up.

Oh YES!! Much bigger than just Halloween.

Current thoughts ...
  • light box - probably acrylic all round ... probably 24" x 24"
  • LEDs ... but I don't know what type - suggestions welcome
  • frosted acrylic top
  • thin acrylic insert (to hold decal and slot onto of light box)

Jimmy deresta did a similar build a couple months back for a band or something. Same idea cut out words and led backlight. You tube has it if you can find it

A light box with a changeable front plate sounds like an excellent idea. If you get some programmable LEDs you could even change colors depending on the event/season.

This is what I have so far ...

  1. ordered a 3" x 4" sample of Satinice two-sided velvet texture cloud WH26 DC
  2. ordered a 3" x 4" sample of ACRYLITE® extruded clear 0A000 GT
  3. mock-up of a graphic (see below)
  4. clear window decal from one of the various printing shops on line - https://www.signs.com/clear-window-decals/
  5. I have some LEDs left over from when I added mood lighting to my CaseLabs build ... will see how they look under the acrylic / perspex / plexiglass samples

I haven't even thought about building the box yet ... still undecided on the size of the sign. The decal will be stuck to item #2. Item #1 is frosted and will let the LED light through.

Still largely undecided on the font and the drop shadow on the top text looks a little chunky to me.
