First test drive with the new engine was exciting and a complete fail.
<snip>
Great honest story... We have all been there, less share. And for those who have not been there, they are not trying hard enough.

Proops man.

Anyone know what oil to use in the transmission of a 1969 John Deere 60 lawn tractor?

I’ll drain out whatever gunk is in there and refill with whatever it smells like, I suspect gear lube.

Can you tell us what your starting platform is? Looks like a John Deere 70 or 100 maybe?

It’s was a John Deere 60 Lawn tractor.

The original engine and grass cutter was missing, they’re not particularly collectable and this one only cost $35 so it’s a good use for it.

Looks like my last post got lost in the server.

I’m back at it,
Plan is to be ready for next summers racing season so I can drive around the pits.

I’ve built almost every part twice as I’m making this up as I go.

The lawn Jeep sat untouched for almost a year but it’s finally done after a big push during august.

Mini Jeep has no problems towing the lawn roller!
Running great after a winter under a tarp.

The biggest problem with this thing is that there is not enough weight on the front axle. It is very easy to do a wheelie and on wet grass you have almost no steering.
I’m thinking of building a new front bumper out of some 2x3 steel I have and filling it with cement.
Or I’m going to look for a giant winch to mount upfront just for the weight LOL

Deer is famous for strange sizes for their belts
the wear adjustments do not make up for it
You need OEM belts

I’m really like the idea of a big winch on the front, Princess Auto has a 5500 lb winch on sale that weights 32lbs according to their website!

I’ve heard this but All of the pulleys have been changed so the original belts definitely won’t fit.

I bought a few belts from Princess auto and found some that work

Winch (with front mounted big battery too) will add lots of WHAM or POP, [and 60-80#'s combined]! If you need more weight, that grill looks like adding or recreating in heavier solid stock shouldn't be too terribly difficult Jeeps simplistic design was/is your friend. You used a plywood body right? Keep us in the loop Please. Harry

The primary purpose of the Jeep is to cruise the pits at the drag strip.
I’m thinking of building an extended platform off the front bumper to carry a beer cooler. That would add plenty of weight and convenience

Great project it came out really good and must get a lot of looks. Your post reminds me of a mower I sold about 10 years ago.
It was a roof palomino, 2 seater tractor that was a copy of a jeep with a 60" cutting deck. I wish I kept it but a friend convinced me
to throw it on ebay and it went for wayyyyy more than I expected. It's now in the Dumont museum in Sigourney Iowa.

I'd love to find another but they seem pretty rare.

I’ve seen pictures of the Palomino Jeeps and they are awesome. Unfortunately they are rare and somewhat valuable so I’d feel bad using one for anything other than a display piece.

Mine is low cost, looks cool and I’m not worried if it gets knocked around being played with, I built it once I can build it again.

thats why I sold it, I was into it for $1000 and a 3 hr trip to get it, in less than 24 hrs on ebay it went for $5000. I only used it for a while around the neighborhood and a couple times towing the smoker to the block party.
