Lay out ideas?

Hey all,

I'm in need of a shop redo and was thinking I bet there are some good ideas on here. What Im looking for is ideas like what kind of work stations you would put next to each other. Where would you put your welding table if you could do it over?

Stuff like that.

I would ideally put my welding table in a much larger shop.

What type of tools, work and space do you have? If you are all about production and space is available; there are a plethora of books pertaining to the optimization of shop layout for efficient production through work flow. However, the vast majority of small or home shops are typically organized in a "it fits here" Tetris style fashion.

Its impossible to know what you are welding, dime sized stuff or complete tube frames for racing cars with the fixturing to match. Could be stuff in between or a variety of work.

Also it matters to me what process is being used. All the red hot rolling slag from Mig welding makes me nervous in a wood framed building, even with drywall. So I do this outside. Tig welding, however, much lower fire danger to the actual structure since no hot balls of metal rolling around normally...

I don't have a dedicated weld table, its also a work surface which I clean off the appropriate area when its time to weld.

If you have gads of space, suspend the welder high over the center of the table this way there is easy access to all sides of the bench.

I would make sure the saw is inline with your steel rack so you don't have to carry large pieces and turn them 90 degrees constantly. Also, a piece of 1" x 1/4" flat laying on the floor from your welder to your table for a ground instead of another cable to trip over. I keep my welding and torch helmets in a cabinet on the wall above the welder they stay much cleaner and the lenses need less cleaning. Hard to commment on more without your plans and jobs.
