I am in the process of purchasing my first home after renting for so long. the only thing is the garage is a gravel floor and my first project will be to put a concrete floor in. I have not done much with concrete in the past and when i did work with it, it was making a shed from scratch(even then i just helped). So does anyone have a few tips on how to go about this. i will not be able to afford to hire someone so i will be doing it with a few buddies..any help is greatly appreciated.

I have never done a slab by myself and I don't think I would. Hiring 2-3 guys for $500-600 is cheap compared to fawking up a $3000 slab.

How big is your garage? Finishing concrete is not an easy job. Concrete finishers make it look so easy you think that you would be able to do it with no problem. If its a small job you might be able to find one to do it for you for a minimum $300 charge. Well worth it.

I just had 58' by 15' poured last week in my shed, 10 yards worth. It cost me more for that than the other 20 yards I poured with buddies. But it was allot less work!!!! all wheelbarrowed in. Get a the good mix with the fibers in it, use a expansion joint around your foundation and the ones that you dont see in the concrete Do you have a floor drain or want one? plan for it before you pour. a pro can do a better job even if you know how to float and finish, and those power trowels are great! We just cleared another part of the shop to pour another 5 yards, almost done wish I could have afforded to pour the 100' by 48' building at one time, but I couldn't and 25 yrs later still not done.....tt

I'm kind of in the same boat. I was looking for someone do do my floor (27x33) but was amazed how much people wanted to do it. Nothing under $2500 for just the labor, and I already have it ready to go. Vapor barrier is down and rebar in place and truck can pull right to the door so that is just the price from laying and finishing. I'll be doing it myself with friends for the price of concrete beer and pizza.

If it's not that big of an area, and you have a couple guys with at least some concrete experience and proper tools, you should be able to get it done yourself

There certainly is no hit to the economy in my area
