laying out my garage

well first off I am new to the board and have been doing a lot of lookin, some serious setups here! Mine will be a little more conservative

I just bought a house with a detached 25' x 25' barn/garage, I have removed the horse stalls, added an LVL for support and insatalled new collar ties from the LVL over to one side and tied them into the old collar ties which did not carry the full lenth, they just sat on top of the horse stalls header

what I am looking for is layout info/floor plans for a gagage this size, it will be amixed use garage used for lawn equip, work shop, my old car, the wife to park in primarily when it snows and storage

in the next month I will have a new floor poored, I will try to attach a few pics for reference

btw I know it's a mess, the house has come first and everytime we start a project everything gets piled in the garage

If your plan is to park your wife's car inside, then it has to go at the single garage door location. You might get a workbench along the front of that side and some shelves, but not much else. That leaves you the other side for your stuff and projects. Make sure you can get your old car in there.

There is no "Plan" for a garage. You must work with your existing conditions and work out a plan based on the functions you need to accommodate.
First do some measuring. Measure and lay out on paper what the garage looks like in plan, with windows, doors, columns and beams. Leave room on the paper for the surrounding lot and draw in the adjacent area including grade changes, fences, walls, lot lines and even indicate good views.
Take a lot of photos inside and out and post them.
Next, write out a comprehensive list of the functions and tasks and uses you want to put the space to. Plan for your ultimate uses. Look ahead and list everything you want to be able to do in and around the garage and lot. Examples:
Space to store project car
Space for workbench
Space for tool cart
Space for kids toys
Space for compressor Etc.....
Now, based on the list, start assigning functions to particular places. Make them relate to each other in common sense ways, IE parking space for daily driver inside of door.

If the functions won't all fit in this space then consider building an additional structure or adding on to this one to accommodate them.

you might want to play with google scetchup. A little time with the tutorials and you can start rough modeling the components you have, and then go from there.

Warning! Warning!! "amixed use garage used for lawn equip" .... I've found that lawn equipment takes up way too much space in a garage/workshop. Think about it ... lawn tractor, lawn trailer, push mower, wheelbarrow, edger, leaf blower, shovels, rakes, hoes, bags of fertilizer, mulch, gas cans, etc. ... it goes on and on. Buy or build a small garden shed for the lawn & garden stuff. A garden shed can also be "her" space where she can keep all the flower pots, bug sprays, seed trays, or whatever else she likes to do.

I agree with John in Oh first thing I would do is build a shed out back behind the garage for the lawn garden tools and tractor.

Ditto on a shed for yard and garden stuff. A 25' x 25' isn't real huge, so if you plan on putting a car and a workshop with a bench it eats up quite a bit of room right there. You could add a small lean-to on the back to hang all of the garden tools.

I wholeheartedly agree with the need for a separate shed for the garden equipment. It's amazing how quick a garage becomes too full of "stuff" to work on or even park cars.

My number one rule for the garage is "if it's not a vehicle, parts for a vehicle or tools for working on vehicles, then it doesn't belong in the garage, period, no debate".

I have three sheds. One is a pool shed, and the other two are for yard/garden equipment and the wife's outdoor junk. Some say it looks redneck having all those sheds, but I don't care. It keeps the garage what it's supposed to be.

thanks for the concern about the garage becoming a garden shed, for now it will have to pull double duty and yes I have everything John in Oh listed except the wheelbarrow, her car will only be parked in the garage for snow storms tho!! so in general it will be my Firebird and lawn equip etc..

you guys are right on about a shed/lean too or another alternative, I have been debating a 12' x 6' with a roll up door off the back to dedicate for lawn equipment and the snowblower, posibly even permanently install the compressor in there!? but this will be next year as I have plenty of other outdoor projects this spring, retaining wall, leveling, timber swing set etc...

life changes with a family!! when I bought my first house my first projects were fully to gut and remodel my living room into a living/theatre room, install a complete surround system/outdoor speakersetc.. then set up my garage
