Hi all,

I'm working on getting my 20x20 garage rewired.

It's currently a nearly clean slate but does have some "history".

As part of a general remodel of the house and gut of the garage, I had some work already done (permitted and professional rework).

The first pic attached shows the new meter/panel that was installed to replace an old zinsco fire trap panel. The "sub-panel" lable is what runs over to an older sub used for an addition that was done in '79 (that was also permitted work at the time). The other meter on the right was for a mobile home that used to exist out in the back yard (also permitted). I hope to use that seperate meter for a detached garage/workshop sometime in the future.

The next pic is a new panel added into the garage during the "old house" remodel (kitchen, HVAC, laundry, etc). This is roughly 2-3 feet from the outside meter panel.

The last pic is the sub-panel that feeds the addition and pool equip. The addition is primarily a greatroom with upstairs master bed/bath (currently being remodeled). This panel also used to feed the garage and laundry but not any longer.

So, in general, kinda a cluster of **** I'm wanting to retrofit to be safe and workable.

A few details ...
The main meter panel has a 200a disconnect and only used for some bedroom plugs and the old sub panel (50a).
The new garage panel has a 200a disconnect and feeds kitchen/HVAC/laundry.
Both these panels are within 3' of each other and both have ample room for feeding for the garage needs.
The old sub-panel is only currently being used for some greatroom outlets, the fridge, and the pool. The master bed/bath also feeds from here but has been shutdown during it's gut job.

Would appreciate some suggestions on simplifying this as well as how/where I should tie in for the needs of the garage refurb.

For the "garage" side I'll have the following needs/wants:
1) a 50a 240 drop for welding (probably directly below the new garage panel)
2) a 15a 120 circuit for 6 or 8 2x4 t-8 lights
3) two 20a 120 circuits for double duplex outlets ringing the garage
4) one 20a 120 circuit to feed a outside shed with irrigation well pump (5a) and compressor. Possibly a light fixture?
5) a 30a 240 circuit opposite the 50a drop for future use.

Thoughts? ...

Is the garage attached or detached? If detached, your only option is a single feeder to the garage with a subpanel as u can only have one circuit that feeds a detached structure!

it's attached.

Here's a layout of the space

The meters and new panel are at the lower left, the addition sub-panel is midway on the top ...

a first cut at my thoughts about wiring is attached.

From the 50a sub on the top wall, take a 30a 240 and 30a 120 for the outside shed. That panel already has breakers for this (the 240 for a dryer and the 120 that was using 12ga for a 150' run).
Also draw a 20a 120 for outlets on that top wall.

From the new garage panel add:
2x 20a 120 for garage usage
1x 50a 240 for welder (drop directly below the panel)
1x 20a 120 for door opener and overhead outlet (only opener outlet shown)
1x 15a 120 for lighting.
