Ok, so little back story. I figured I would just park in a garage and not care but times have changed. I use to just buy bolt on parts and be happy, again times have changed. Now I need to change the garage to fit current and future projects. I need to have the garage be everything from a auto body shop to a tv repair place. And I can say that I need help to do this. I know it won't be perfect, I am not perfect.

As it stand now the garage has worked, but it's been a fight to keep it clean and ready to go. I plan to mod some things but that needs to wait till summer, I am in the planning stage right now......

This is the outside. Two doors, center support, not much else. House entrance is off the left bay. I plan to add a man door on the right.

Current work area. Plan on moving sink to other side of pole and making loft stares fold so I have the full 18 foot depth when needed.

Back wall that I want to change so it can support full depth. So I plan to move central vac to under side shelfs (will need to remove one)

Small 4x8 loft that will be taken down to build a 10x7 loft off the 10x8 loft I use to put tools in. The new loft will hang off a support beam and sit on a 2x4 half wall I need to build on. Walk around loft. New loft will be a crawl loft.

Spot I am thinking of putting a furnace. Already paid to have natural gas ran into garage.

Current project. It needs lots.

Walking loft storage area.

Idea - Have the left bay open for car project. Right bay (10 wide 18 deep) as workshop. Work shop will need to do a lot. Plan on picking up down the road a combo mill and lathe, tig welder (and weld table to go with), and more tool storage as I do not have enough. I need help with floor plan ideas. Do I scrap the man door to outside to gain more wall space.... Please help and provide input.

Thanks,
Mr.Sandbag

What would be the possibility of making your garage a two story garage with a lightweight work space above and heavy items below? The ceilings look high enough for a second story where you can have a full fledged upper shop. It would double your work space too...

I would scrap the idea of the man door, as you say it just causes the space to be squeezed tighter.

Model A Fan - Can't do a second level. I want to get a lift down the road and the one side is being kept open for that dream.

Matt I - thanks for the input.

Agree on ditching the man door, just added expense and trouble for losing space.

I think the key in any garage/shop project is to purge all the stuff that doesn't directly relate to the projects that are going on in the garage/shop.

You can't expect to store all the homeowner stuff in a small space and have a decent workspace. so take a long hard look at what you have stored in there and figure out someplace else to put the non-essentials. A good solution is some sort of storage shed for all the yard stuff.

Take a look at Jack Olsen's 12 gauge garage thread http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55006&highlight=guage

for some great idea.

First off you need to adjust your attitude. You have to get that can do feeling and project it so every one you know will say "That a$$h01e thinks he is perfect".:bowdown::bowdown: Okay that's as much Tony Robbins as I can project.

Your goals are ambitious with all you want to accomplish in such a small space. I would suggest sitting down with graft paper and doing multiple layouts. Keep in mind the working space around your tools needs to be about 3 ft. beyond the tool. One way to cheat on this is to overlap deck heights and copious use of casters on tools so you can move them.

The space for you automobile projects is very restrictive so you will probably need to get some wheel dollies.

A storage shed would really clear out all the stuff in your garage that doesn't need to be in there for projects.

I have a shed under the deck (10x13) for snow and summer tires pulse the wife's garden stuff. Plan on doing a 4x8 beside garage for snow blower/lawn mower. The shed on the side made me think the man door might be nice.
