I thought that everything you put into an ultrasonic cleaner was supposed to go into a basket so that it did not touch the bottom of the tank and damage the tank. Besides that it voids your warranty if you don't use a basket.

I've used them for gun cleaning for years. Just take the grips off, field strip, put in basket and drop in the cleaner. About 2.5 to 3.0 minutes take it out, wipe down, blow it dry with some compressed air, lightly oil, reassemble, reload and get back to work.

Love to have one in the garage now....

I use my ultrasonic cleaner to clean carbs for motorcycles. Works better than old fashioned carb dip and it won't hurt rubber parts.

Good catch. It's good practice to use a basket or platform. Usually, the damage happens either because of poor weld quality on the cheapo imports or exposed transducers (like on bigger units). In this case, the transducers were outside of the tank, and the welds are solid. Oh yeah, and I was too lazy to go look for the basket. :) Notice that I drop the part in and then suddenly have it attached to a rod??? Momentary lapse.

what are the cons of u/s cleaners?..........

These days on metal, mostly upfront cost (though they save you money on labor if you are doing enough quantity).

When ultrasonics first came out, there were two major issues. First, the frequencies were lower. This led to larger bubbles, which sometimes damaged fragile surfaces; ceramic flexo printing (anilox) rolls are a great example of this. Second, the frequencies didn't vary. This led to interference patterns in the sound waves, so there would be 2x the power in some places and zero in others. Modern sweeping frequency units fix this.

Also, the lab is open to GJ members free of charge. Granted, it's in Chicago, so that doesn't help everyone. However, if you live anywhere nearby, you're welcome to come bring in parts and play with the equipment.

When I worked in the testing lab at work (chemical company), we had a small one. I put my fingers in it once while it was on...gave a really weird feeling in the joints. Probably not recommended.

That "really, really old" part, looks like a timing chain tensioner guide on a Ford modular 4.6/5.4L.

And, I really really want one of those cleaners.

Believe me, you don't want car repair tips from me, other than as perhaps a cautionary tale. I'm - at best - a shadetree mechanic. I just enjoy turning a wrench.

Meh, we make some that are north of $40K for large LARGE parts!
Dont get me wrong, they're awesome tools and I would love to own one especially in that 4 gal size. That would be perfect for me, however I just cant justify it for home use and Ill be damned if I shell out that kind of money for use at work. I wont be able to keep people from using/ tearing it up......however, I might be able to make some money if I offer my new ultrasonic cleaning services to our 28 other stores

Do you sell these units or...I would assume you're somehow affiliated with graymills. Can I contact you with some more questions about them?

Didn't Bull's HF ultra sonic cleaner get decent reviews?
It did ....until it died within a few months. I think he replaced it with a small crest

Yeah, they are hard to justify unless you have volume. And you're thinking along the lines that some other people have - selling the service to cover the cost of your machine. Heck, we do that with our 3D printer. With 28 stores, you could keep the thing humming.

I'm the President of Graymills, but I post here unofficially as a shadetree gearhead. You can reach me at [email protected].

Man, you have a 3d printer too? you get a "you **** award" for that. Wish you were just a bit closer to me I would stop by and check the place out.

Expect an email from me after christmas. We're so backed up right now I barely have time to work, let alone venture into a new business capitol. Ill get as much info from your site and send you my unanswered questions. Thanks
