Like the title says, wife showed me tonight, when she turns off the ceiling fan with the wall switch the TV loses video for 1 second then comes back on.

House is 7 years old, do not know if this was a problem from the start or not.

What should I check?

Is this a hazard (fire) etc....?

Happens to me sometimes. I think it's just a bit of RFI from suddenly interrupting the current.

My 2 cents. It sounds like the fan wall switch which is providing power to fan also provides power to something else on same circuit, sat. box, etc.
Otherwise you could try turning fan off at the fan instead of wall switch.

Cable (Direct TV) HDMI from DTV box to TV

Are they both plugged into the same set of receptacles?

Where and how is the incoming cable TV cable grounded?

Is your house powered by a subpanel, or only a main panel?

Does your house have Romex or conduit?

Is it possible there's a ground loop via the cable TV cable?

Could the fan be using ground as a neutral?

...

My theory is the switching off the light causes a disturbance on the ground. This interrupts cable reception and it takes a second for everything to resync.

Probably just EMI.

My USB keyboard, mouse and flash drives all drop off and come back when I turn my paper shredder on/off. I chalk it up to my cheap (probably non-shielded) chinese USB hub. Maybe try a higher quality HDMI cable.

is your usb hub powered by a separate power source (transformer)? or does it get its power from the usb from computer/laptop? power usage/irq addressing somewhat different than HDMI. but cheap-chinaman-unshielded-lowquality is an important factor too :)

my thinking as well, a lot of SATV/CATV installs not grounded properly. and those SATV boxes can backfeed onto coax

I can live with it, just did not want a fire hazard present. I was thinking as well it was a Sat/Cable box (ground) problem v.s. an electrical problem

Mine does it too. The TV has a 2 wire plug and the coax goes to an ungrounded antenna in the attic :dunno:
