Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but I have a simple question. Based on the attached two pics, do you say it's a 12v or 6v battery?

On the top says 12v and on the side, says 6v. It belongs to my kids riding, 3 wheeled police scooter similar to Power Wheels.

I am thinking about getting this one but it's 12v

Thanks!

The second picture says its 12 volts, it's molded into the top between the 2 stickers....

Might be 2x 6V battery in series together... the top looks like just a plastic cap... so take a pic from the side... if it is two battery you will see the gaps. If you google 3-FM-12 battery.. you'll see the profile is slimmer than the 2nd pic...... Anyways more pic...

make use of your multimeter skills.

google search on 3 fm 12 battery shows 6v, 12 amp hr battery

What's the voltage across the battery when you plug in the scooter to charge it?

Sounds like it’s 6 volts. Don’t replace with 12 volts !!!!!

You could also measure the voltage output of the charger to verify. Having the old battery in the circuit is a good idea, but I bet you could measure the output of the charger too at the plug. It probably has a center terminal and then the outer metal shell that slides into the electric trike.

You do have a V.O.M. (volt ohm meter), right?

Not suggesting that you try, but if you're looking for more power 12 volt battery might work. Ive seen people using dewalt 20v batteries in those cars (probably 12 volt system) to get more oomph out of them.

There is the risk of course of catching fire or burning up the motor or other electronics though, so proceed with caution if you do it.

I didnt see the 6v stamped on the battery at first, so I would personally go to a battery store and get a replacement there. They have numerous manuals to cross reference batteries and get every spec on it. Also, as far as I know (Amazon probably excluded) you can't return batteries after purchase. So if you go to the battery store you might pay a little more up front, but you'll also get exactly what you need without worry

I agree.

It looks like two 6V batteries, tied in series by the plastic molded cap ( which must have a jumper wire underneath ) this makes it a 12VDC battery

I bet when you measure the charger output, with the battery connected, will be 13.8-14.4VDC

Agreed. These usually have double stick tape holding the two batteries together, and the "jumper wire" is usually a fuse.

Well, that's fun. The suggestions to check charging voltage are good. You could also take a look at the charger, motor and any literature you can find on the scooter to see if you can find another clue as to the real voltage. Another clue would be to look at the dimensions for a 3-FM-12 battery and see if they match what you have.

Check battery voltage and/or charger output voltage.

The manufacturer’s website lists the battery as 6v.

https://www.sbb-battery.com/Products_View.asp?ID=1

It also give dimensions of the 3FM12 and their other batteries.

See if the battery dimensions match any of the listed batteries.

The 3FM12 is supposed to be 50mm(1.97”) wide. The 12v batteries with the same length as the 3FM12 have widths starting at 65mm(2.56”).
