Leaf spring stool

Took off the old leaf springs from my CJ. I was thinking it might be cool to make a shop stool from them or one of them.

I am looking for thoughts on how you would design it. I have the old brake rotars from the front that i was thinking i will use as a base and i have an old steel tractor seat that is really comfy.

Would you go A frame? Would you go with one as a base and one angled up? The packs are about 3 to 4 feet wide, so putting them out sideways would be too much.

I want some bounce but not too much so i dont know if I should use just one leaf or the pack?

Have searched the net and didnt see one out there like this (maybe that should tell me something!).

I has a plasma cutter and a welder, just need the project.

All thoughts welcome.

Nice idea!

I would break the packs apart and use individual springs to give you a cool look and you could add or remove them untill the "spring of the stool" is where you want it.

Sorry for the poor drawing but Im much better at building whats inside my head then drawing it.

Something like this.



you could use springs from three or four welded points at the base to stabilize it or get creative and cut and paste a cool design all the way up... as complex or simple a layout as you like.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide.

Thats a better idea than what i was thinking. I would have to cut them to height, but that would keep the center more under my but.

I will play with it tonight and see what I come up with. Thanks.

That sounds like a really cool idea, that I would like to make, but I wouldnt expect it to be very springy.
Even a single leaf spring could take more than 100 lbs to flex an inch in the middle when horizontal.
Cutting it in half could take more than 200 lbs.
A pair of them cut in half could take more than 400 lbs.
Vertically there would be alot less spring than that.
How do you plan on attaching the springs to the rest of the assembly?
Ive never had much luck welding spring steel or cast iron (brake rotor).

Still a very good idea.
