yes, another leaking floor jack question. The jack works fine, except it dribbles oil when its being pumped up. It holds my truck up fine, with no bleed down over short periods of time. It is leaking from the ram (?) or main piston. How difficult is it to fix this leak- I do not want to rebuild the entire jack- just fix this leak. Is it simply a matter of unscrewing the cap and replacing an o ring? Thanks.

Those top nuts on the main ram can be exceptionally tight. In the past when I used to work on jacks I would make a tool from a 1" impact socket and then use a 1" impact wrench to break it loose. Very easy this way and you don't wind up messing up the nut like I have seen when people use pliers or other improper tools.

My floor jack was doing the same thing. I just put a new o-ring (50 cents at my local hdwe store) in the ram mechanism and changed hydraulic fluid. Been working drip free since.

is a special tool needed to remove this top cap? There are no flat surfaces that I see.

There is a Oring inside that Tank nut, But it sounds like you are getting start-up leakage by the Main Ram cup, and more than likely just replacing the oring wouldnt do you any good, There not designed to hold back that much oil. Its not very smart just to take it apart and not rebuild the jack, Once you get it out of the frame your halfway there. There is a special wrench that was used to remove those tank nuts but its Not a Purchasable tool.

There is a bit of flat area on the tank nut, Near the Resevoir. Its a small area and using a Pipe wrench is your only option (Without making a tool that will fit the rounded Tanknut) and it will leave teeth marks and you must be carefull not to get into the seam area. Its Uphill business but when that Jack was built, they didnt want your average Joe working on them. Those tank nuts generally arent on there that tight, when compared to the Walker/Lincoln versions.

Thanks, Hiball. I've removed it from the frame, but don't really see any flat spots. I tried a pipe wrench, but didn't go all out on it, yet. Is this jack worth rebuilding? Its an old Blackhawk, age and model # unknown. Thanks.

70's-Early 80's, SJ1/2, Yes its worth rebuilding and the flat spot is very small and near the Resevoir seam, It appears there are prior teeth marks or the ones you made in the Proper area (Again try to stay off the Resevoir). If you need a rebuild kit give me a shout..

no kidding? The teeth marks are mine...from a pipe wrench. I will go down and look at it again. Thanks, again.
