Hi guys, I havent posted in awhile, havent had time or money to work on my garage remodel yet, but have recently gotten into woodworking and have a nice collection of tools, only problem is that the area were I planned to set everything up is leaking over the whole secon half of the shop, its a 24x42 polebarn converted into a guest house at one point, and now a workshop. The question I have is if anyone knows of a cheap quik fix for the roof seeing as I cant have it redone til next year during tax refund time. I dont want to go up the an caulk ever leak since it is an old shingled roof that might be impossible anyways since it leaks around and through the shingles. Does anyone have some tricks or ideas that I can cheaply stop the leaks for another year? and by cheaply I mean under about $300, thats all I have to work with. Any ideas here would be greatly apreciated, and thanx for reading this.

If it's leaking bad enough to get through shingles tar paper and plywood, That's pretty bad. I'm assuming it's leaking in multiple areas. Really a tarp wont last a year. Seems like you have get some old shingles and Start replacing. You might get by with some sort of brush on tar. It really depends on what type of leaks you have. You can sometimes find them on craigslist. If your looking for an easy way out of doing any work, your not gonna find it. If you need a temporary fix on the inside. You could always put up gome plastic and funnel it somewhere else. Post some pics of the roof and that might help with at least determining the shape of the shingles.

Yep...shop around for some shingles. There are quite a few places that sell shingles where the bundles are busted open. You can usually get these for half price. Or if you really want to skate by, look at some roofing coating for mobile homes. This is the silver stuff. Mop it on your roof. It will be a mess but would get you by until you re-roof.

tarp the whole roof and fasten it down with battens, short of that unless you know the source of the leak you'll keep chasing it down. make sure they do the roof right when you have it redone and strip it to the deck

Tarp. Good ol' blue trap. They'll last about 4 months if exposed to direct sunlight. One year would mean changing at least 2 times, maybe three. and it all would probably be under $300.

That's about all you can do. One other choice - bad one IMHO for the money, but it would probably work is to cover the roof with synthetic underlayment. That runs about $130 a roll for 250' x 4'. you'll need at least two rolls, plus a box of plastic cap nails to secure it. That stuff is very tough and will last a long time exposed.

thanx for the suggestions guys, I thought of tarp, but figured it just wouldnt hold up long, plus it gets windy around here sometimes, and I wasn't sure about using the mop on stuff seems like that might be a good try. I would just go ahead and replace shingles but the leaks are so spread out that I'd wind up having to redo the whole roof in the process, and I just cant afford that yet, plus I'd hate to buy shingles, replace them, just to have them all go to waste next year when I get the new roof installed. I'll probably try the mop on tar stuff and see how that goes, once it warms up a bit that is.
