I'm thinking of add a lean 2 closet on the outside of my shop for my compressor. I figure it would be a lot quieter, and save space inside. Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome.

good idea in general.

Cold starts difficult in winter in comparison to being inside and insulated but you could insulate your closet.

automatic drain is good too

I did just that . added an 8 x 12 lean , framed a 6 x 4 ft for the compressor .. put a sandblasting cabinet in the other part . insulated all the walls ,build my own doors ( insulated them as well , can hardly hear the compressor now , knowing that heat from the compressor may be a problem in such a small area i put a small air conditioner through the wall .

I did this as well. I made mine 3' deep and 8' wide. It works great and I can keep a few other items in their as well. I did put a little vent fan in mine that turns on when the air compressor is on. Just to vent out hot air.

I haven't done this yet, but I will be doing a little enclosed lean-to with my compressor and dust collection system in it.

Compressor noise seems to be the main reason why so many people place their a/c units in an exterior enclosure. These same people need to remember that all air cooled a/c units are tremendous heat generators when operating and need to be properly cooled in order to last a decent time, as heat can destroy anything it comes into contact with.
The same can also be said about a too cold a/c environment. Too often I've seen a/c installations where the unit is treated like an unwanted step child.

I hadn't thought of dust collection in there too. Mixed feelings on that. Would be nice to get another noise maker outside, but concerned about putting it that close together. Insulation and make up air is part of the plan.

Most of the noise comes from the intake on a compressor they make mufflers for them

I put my compressor outside my garage against the wall and then put two sides on it with a slanted roof. One side is open for cooling. That was 7 years ago - no problems.
