I am building a 30x40 pole barn with a 4/12 pitch roof. To get the clearance I want in the lean to's I am going to be at like a 1.5/12 pitch is the ok or a little low?

How big is the lean-to? If it's only a few feet wide it's no big deal I think, but if it's a significant distance then it might have load bearing issues if theres snow load...

I have something like that on my house's car-port. Its certainly not ideal.

How wide is the lean-to? If you go with metal the full width there's no seams to draw water back underneath. The transition is still vulnerable though.

14' lengths of tin shouldn't be a problem. You'll want to membrane the 4/12 roof up to past the level of snow accumulations on the lean-to.

Check with the manufacture of metal roof pannels. I do beleve there is one that says there profile is good down to 1.5/12 pitch. Its not a normal R rib pannel. Those are good to 3/12 pitch.

What will be the height of the lean-to's outside wall? Can you reduce the height to increase the roof pitch? The outside wall on my lean-to is 6.5' high and I don't have any problems walking around inside.

We ice and water guard 100% anything 3/12 or less.

Our shallowest pitch roofs are 3/12. Asphalt shingles.

I have a 32X50 at 4/12 with a 17x50 lean-to at 1.5/12 with metal roof. Rafters are 2x8 at 24" centers. It's been up for about 5 years with no problems. In central KY.

I was going to say the same thing - take about a foot of grade out and you will make a big improvement in slope. Cut the eves off, put the rim joist a few inches high, balloon in the pitch to the existing roof and you will be money.

Scraping off a foot and blending back into the surrounding area is pretty easy as long as the approach isn't paved yet.
