- for me that would depend upon the indicator and the intended purpose. For brake rotors I use a Mitutoyo plunger type with a lugged attachment back. That way it's a solid mount (1/4-20 SHCS) and stays out of the way. For checking spindles or other precision work I almost always use an Interapid that has a pivoting stem. I rarely use the dovetail rails that are part of the Interapids. All the other indicators I have use only a dovetail mount of one type or another and I don't always trust them to be solidly clamped to the dovetail, differences between different makes is sometimes very small and aren't as solid a mount as I prefer unless the clamp is the same brand. Dovetail clamps take me a few minutes longer to set up too and I've already made provisions for the Interapids to mount to all my tooling for mill, lathe, jog borer, and surface plate work. Everybody has different preferences and I don't consider mine to be superior to others. If it's a solid mount, stays out of your way, and mounts easily for you then it's good enough IMO.On the topic of holders, do you prefer lug back or shaft mount attachment points on the dial indicator?
-If you tell me or show me what indicator(s) you have and the application(s) you want it for I could probably give you an even longer winded reply.
