Learning to refurbish Beach Tool Box B29 and B27

I got lucky the past week and finally was able to get a hold of well taken care of Beach B29 and B27 tool cabinets originally owned by m friends Father. Reminded me so much of the boxes i would see at my Dads shop when he worked for British United in Toronto. I really want to honor the craftsmanship by restoring the box so I too can pass it on some day. My challenge really is I am not sure what path to take to restore the box. The only work i have done on paint is clay bar and polishing paint on a car.

Presently I started by inspected the box and found the following:

(1) Top box has a dent from something falling on it. Thinking about using a rubber mallet to knock this out.

(2) The outside of the box has some wear and tear where some places have scratches going down to the metal.

(3) There is also some grey over spray from some other handy work.

(4) Inside the cabinet was not fully painted.

(5) Two of the sliders on two different draws are warped. Thinking of taking these out to adjust them. Possibly use the vice squeeze the guides back.

(6) Some of the guides are sticking and need to be cleaned and re-lubed. Not sure how to clean these.

That being said alls I've done is vacuum out the box and the guides. Used a blow dryer to get the stickers off. And anything sticky I have used wd40.

It would be great to get feedback from the community on an approach to get this all done. Even suggested product.

Welcome to GJ! You can find several threads on Beach boxes on here. I can make one suggestion. If you put carpet on the inside back wall it sure takes the clack and thump out of opening and closing the drawers. Done that on all of mine.

Thank you Carajou. Maybe I will use something made of rubber so it won't absorb moisture.

I actually read through a couple posts for Beach before I decided to post. The thing is I really don't know the challenges people face when re-painting the box.

If you use something impermeable in there, it will trap moisture.

Looks like I have all the sliders fixed up. Vice worked perfect to straighten these.

Anyone have recommendations on how to clean he draw handles?

Also since i used spray 9 to get grease off the draws, should is use a clay bar to restore the paint?

I use spray on aluminum wheel polish for the handles, works really fast and it's easy.

Probably wont help you this time but they are still being sold here in australia as white international... only recently did they decide to change the handle design.
I had the 9 drawer roll cab a few years back and it was really well made..

Thanks for the recommendation Carcajou.

I ended up doing a little experiment with WD40. There was some dry duct tape residue on several parts of the box. So I sprayed WD40 and let it soak for 20 minutes and then was able to rub it off with a scrubbing sponge. So I did the same on the handles and everything came off. So cheap little trick.

My next step will be to test the Meguliars rubbing compound to see if I can get the over spray off the box. Think i better not work too hard on the box otherwise i will be out in the garage waxing the wifes car in the cold
