Leathermans you rely on?

Hey guys,

Did a quick search and did not see a subject about this. Anyway, after watching ´Cool Tools´and realizing how much I depended on these I thought I would inquire with the masses.

Does anyone else rely on these regularly?

I keep a Wave in the truck, a Juice in the house and a Squirt in my pocket. Then there is the basic 15+ year old variety in the toolbox. I use them all pretty much religiously.

Anyone else?

I keep a Leatherman Fuse on my duty belt and another one on my drop leg rig for SWAT. I use them both quite often and probably more than any other peace of equipment other than my handcuffs.

Got the original Leatherman before they were in stores. Guys were hawking them at gun shows. Carried it daily till I got a Wave. My son asked for my Wave, swapped me for one of his Army issue Gerbers, (he needed needle nose pliers, Gerber has linesman), before his 2nd deployment. Carry the Gerber every day and like it fine, all the tools lock, unlike the Wave, but hope to trade him back some day. IMHO, the Leatherman's still the best multi-tool going.

Nice, quick responses. Being a desk-jockey with a ´no weapons´policy in the office I had to put away my "Gentleman´s Folders" and start carrying the Squirt. It obviously works quite well for the quick box cut or removing screws from a computer but I really wish I could carry more muscle on my hip.

It is nice to see how others utilize theirs.

Have one with my bunker pants and in my wildland gear all the time. Almost got burnt over once due to a barb wire fence and since then, I always carry a leatherman and cut every fence I have to cross.

i have a surge. but a wave is a little better. I owned both. Surge is bigger thus you have more leverage on the plier action. The wave is so cute and light.

****, I knew I had another. I have a Micra as well...unfortunately it resides in a kitchen cabinet and only gets used whenever something with scissors (non food related) is needed. Thanks for the reminder!

I carry my wave every day.I've blown through three holsters. My girlfriend got it for me for my birthday one year. Getting kinda dull. Anyone know how to sharpen the serrated knife?

I've got a new Wave, Charge ALX, and two Skeletools - one of each style. The Skeletools are easiest to cary in-pocket, but the Wave and Charge are nice belt carryable.

I bought a PST II at 14 lost it at 17, bought another one the next day lost it at 19, and bought a Wave that I have carried everyday since then. Its probably a weird day if I don't use it at least once.

I prefer the Gerbers with the one-handed slide out jaws. I like that you can open and close them so easily while holding something with the other hand. I've actually got two - one full size that I carry regularly, and the 3/4 size that I use in office settings. I've had a Gerber with me for 15 years.

My dad gave my his leatherman on my first camping trip as a kid, then my grandfather gave me a leatherman blast for christmas. I use them occasionaly, but I am usually near my toolbox and don't need it. Handy as hell in the woods, though.

Gerber fan here. I like the one hand open(though have had to show many people the trick to that)

One of these days I'm going to pick up the model that has slip in sabre saw blades, but I have 3 pairs currently and almost always have one with me.

I carried a SOG Paratool for almost 10 years. The pliers head opens oddly on it, confusing a lot of people--as the head opens, the handles angle out at the same time. You have to close it with both arms moving together at the same time, rather than one arm at a time. It had great leverage. It broke last fall while putting a lot of pressure on a nut trying to turn it. The bolt that held the handle to the pliers head busted after being worn thin from opening/closing for a decade.

Replaced it with a Leatherman Core last Christmas. I use it all the time, but it's a little big... the SOG was smaller and more compact, and I'm used to that. The Leatherman is obvious on the belt, while the SOG was more discreet and doesn't get snagged on things. Same types of tools on each. The tools on the Core lock in the open position, which is a big plus.

I just went to the SOG site, and inquired about a warranty, so we'll see if the old SOG gets a reprieve and put back in the rotation. It'd be damn handy to keep in the '62 Suburban's glove box at all times.

Having a Multitool on my belt and using it ALL the time in so many situations is something my son will remember about me when he's an adult--it's just one of those things that differentiates "dad" from "DAD."

I have a wave that I got second hand. I had a leather sheath made for it. I'm glad that I had it handy this past summer when I had to cut my snagged anchor line.;)

Has he looked at other Gerbers? (they don't all have Linemans pliers)
Some examples:

http://www.gerber-tools.com/Gerber-Multi-Plier-600-det.htm

I thought about the second set (wondering about using the blast cap as a terminal installer and I like the punch idea for metal work, scribe for woodworking).

I have the original Leatherman, and one Gerber that has/had the interchangable pliers (still wish they had those).

I have the Leatherman Blast but I honestly don't wear it much. It goes with me in the woods all the time, but being behind a desk I don't wear it to work. But now that I think of it, I should start because I know I'd find a many uses for it in our labs when I'm looking for tools.

The Gerber was what the Army was issuing at the time, (along with Gerber/Fairbairn folding combat knives), so he didn't have any choice in the matter. He had my Wave and the latest/greatest Gerber, flat black with a tool for dis-arming IED's. I asked him not to feel obliged to see if that option worked.

I have an old Leatherman Mini-tool (no longer made). It is the only one that has a full size plier and still folds down enough to carry in your pocket. I've had it in my pocket for over 10 years and use it many times every day.

I have a Wave on my person at all times.....gets some funny looks at work sometimes as we have the same "no-weapon" policy mentioned earlier....but those looks soon vanish after it fixes whatever problem caused me to get her out.

Victorinox Swiss Tool RS I wear it absolutely every day. If I've got my pants on, I've got the multitool.

RB

I have one of each swisstool - the large one and the Spirit. I love them both. I also have a Squirt. I carry one swisstool in the truck and one at home. I always have a knife in my pocket, either an old Case stockman or an equally old Case Barlow.

When I go to one of those dangerous offices where you can't carry weapons, I carry my knife anyway. Those policies make me puke.

I have an original Leatherman I had since the late 80's.

I bought a Leatherman Wave back in 2002 and never picked up my original leatherman again. The Wave is a real useful mutitool to have. Comes in handy a lot. It goes with me on every fishing trip, camping trip, hike, hunting trip and every trip to the shooting range, and every time I travel. Actually find it to be a primary tool for fishing. I really like it. I looks as if Leatherman introduced a newer version of the Wave in 2004. Mine doesn't have the replaceable bits like the new one. I think it's a great little tool to have in a pinch.
