Leaving garage doors open or closed?

My door is closed unless the weather's really nice and I'm in there. In addition, there are no decorative gas pumps, signs, etc. visible from the outside to hint at what might be inside.

Living in the sticks doesn't hurt matters, either.

Closed except to take out the garbage. We have a 60 inch HD on the front wall in my garage. Its cool to sit in the car and watch movies like in the old days at the drive in theatre.

Closed, don't like people or thieves seeing what I have in tools. It's really scary when you look around and realize the value of all your tools and the fact that your home owners insurance doesn't cover them (unless you have a rider).

I prefer to always have my garage doors closed. This way people wont know when I'm home or gone. Also it keeps my garage more private as well.

Even when it's open... it's covered with a screen. It velcro's to the bottom aluminum door brace, and I bungee cord it the lower door track braces. It filters the direct sunlight, keeps temp's cooler, keeps out bugs, and provides privacy from all the local rubberneckers.

You can see out... but from the road, they can't see in.

Damn. Best idea I've seen all day. Is that a homebrew job? I think I must remember to steal this. Maybe with magnets like the infomercial.

Ever since the mouse infestation in my home and business, doors stay closed as soon as fall approaches and those free-loading rodents start looking for winter accommodations.
+1. Closed unless I'm working in it, and even then if it's dusk (the critters like to come out then).

I also use a screen on one of my garage doors. I leave the screen up most of the summer. It's a el cheapo nylon $20 HFrt. special, but I've been using it for over 5 years now. I attach it with cable clips that are nailed to the pvc outer garage door seal molding, and the bottom is kept in place with a piece of galvanized pipe.

Does it give a little privacy? Totally kill any breeze? I guess you roll screen around pipe for winter storage?

Kinda hard to see thru if at an angle, unless it's dark out and the interior lights are on. Breeze goes through, which is nice. Yep, roll it up for storage.

I keep mine closed unless there is a vehicle or material movement.

Primarily to maintain the micro-climate inside and prevent rust on bare metal surfaces, which I seem to have a lot of. Spring is the absolute worst with everything in the shop being mostly cold and a constant supply of warm moist air trying to force its way in.

I try to haul woodworking and stick welding jobs outside.

Wyattrose69, I have problems leaving my doors open just like you. For some reason friends want to stop in and talk when I want to work. I even have one that likes to smoke and I have told him a thousand times about that.

Even though I am retired I still work on occasion on my things and don't need help or company. My shop is not an entertainment center like some think.
My doors are closed and locked this time of year which is nice. I am sure not what it would take for people to take a hint :)
I don't visit them so stay away from me. Tom

yeah it seems like everybody thinks an open garage door is an open invitation to come smoke cigarettes and drink beer, while watching me work. No thanks

If I'm in there working and it's nice out, I always have it open. I always close it when I am going inside for more than a couple of minutes.

Even in my old neighborhood where the houses were 20 feet from each other, I never had people coming in while I was working on something. Kids would stop sometimes for me to air up the bike tires or something, but that's it.

We will see how the new neighborhood is this spring. There are only going to be 20 houses in the whole neighborhood, so I assume people will want to be friendly, but it is 2 acre lots, so maybe it'll be too far to wander over without purpose. I don't care either way. Yet...

If I am working in it or around the house I will leave the doors open. Otherwise I have to keep it closed because I have had an issue with birds getting in and trying to build nests.

if I'm home, my garage door is open. If I have to go out for anything, the wife closes it....she doesn't like being alone in the house with it open.

The only problems I've ever had, aside from my neighbors coming over to drink beer and shoot the **** (while I'm hard at work on something) has been hummingbirds flying in and getting stuck inside.

My neighbors know there's beer in the garage fridge and they can help themselves if the door is up and I'm not there.
