Hi All -

Do most of the LED linkable shop lights have bulbs that cannot be replaced?

I've seen 10 packs for under 200.00 on amazon. Maybe it is not a big deal as they have a 5 year warranty - if they're still around?

Thanks.

10 bulbs for under $200, would take a long time to recover cost of bulbs in energy savings.
Just saying I bought 4 T18 bulbs for less then $10 ... they are energy efficient compared to what I replaced
Would take me 10 years to use led and save energy at $200 for 10.

the 10 packs OP is referring to are 10 separate 4' fixtures - each has 2 tubes that are (commonly) not replaceable. So for 20 bucks a fixture thats pretty cheap. The lifetime will be the judge of whether its a good deal.

I bought into a 10 pack this summer and so far I love the extra light in the shop!

Those units on amazon seem like a great deal.
For reference, I bought these in January 2017.

These put out less light and are more expensive than the ones you mentioned. I put up 9 in my 24x30 attached garage to supplement the CFL bulbs mounted to the ceiling. They've worked flawlessly so far. I even repurposed a couple when I was insulating the attic and again when we were working outside at night to install the mini-split...so a couple of them have been banged around a little.

Now...is price an indicator of quality? Perhaps. For that amount of money in a non-critical environment, I'd be willing to take a chance with them.

I put in 6 LED UFO high bays. They were not cheap. One burned out after 6 months. Now I have to take it down, ship it back, and wait for a replacement - which will hopefully match the others. It's a pain. Replacing bulbs would have been way easier. That's what I did in my basement.

That's my fear with LED lights. Even name brand ones fail eventually and likely before the claimed lifetime. So I got 4' tube fixtures with replaceable tubes. A little more than some you can find (they were complete with LED tubes). But when the lights go out I can just pop in new tubes. Priceless!

When I no longer have spare T12 fluorescent tubes, I plan to convert my workshop and garage lights to LED lamps.

For task lighting? Maybe.

For lighting a whole garage? Not even if you gave them to me for free...

Why is that?

It's the lowest quality light you can buy. They are built as cheap as they can manage. I would question any spec's they give because there is no testing done on this stuff. Lifespan is especially questionable.

I have 8' strips with led tubes for my main lighting, but my 300 pounds creates too much of a shadow for my aging eyes when I am working close to a wall. I installed fixtures similar to the Amazon lights above my miter saw, scroll saw, drill press, and parts washer. They work fine for what I use them for, but there is no way I would want to use them to light the entire shop.

I bought the Barrina LED T5 lights over a year ago and they are still working fine. My garage is 20X25 and I have my lights configured in two long rectangles (16 lights total). Lights my garage great. Most stuff now a days is throw away so I figure if I can get a few years out of them and they start going out I'll just buy new ones at this price.

I am just converting a semi closed in pole barn for my shop and I have been looking at various lighting options. Thanks for the link, those look like a good option.

I also like your 5-Window, very nice. The garage also looks great.

Thanks for the comments. With the garage being nice and bright it seems to make it more enjoyable to get out there and mess around.

My garage/shop had 3 8ft T12 fixtures until a couple of months ago. A ballast went out in one, and I decided it was time to get rid of outdated technology and go with LEDs. Replacing outdated T12 stuff is getting increasingly more expensive. We used 3 of these Commercial Electric packages, giving us 2k more lumens per 8ft fixture. Time will tell on the longevity, and I fully expect to replace an entire fixture (2 x 4ft lights) if one goes bad. We are very happy with the resulting light increase.

This and if one unit goes bad after a year or two, will you be able to find a replacement that has the same plug to allow it to be "linked" in with the rest of what you already have ?
