Any recommendations / experiences with a well made LED flashlight for everyday use in the shop? I am thinking pretty compact - 5"-6". Unsure about recharge vs battery.

I have four of these. They are lightweight, durable, bright and inexpensive.

I've traveled the world with two of these . I'm talking mountain, jungle and coral reefs. They may have better available but I'll stick with these.

Any small 3" LED flashlight will be great. I've got Coleman brand that I bought at WalMart and it's great. Battery has lasted long time (over a year) even in hot truck.
I'll never buy another "bulb" flashlight . . . LED is way to go.

If you shop around, you might find better deals elsewhere. I would definitely recommend the "piggyback" charger though. It has a holder/charger for the light and a separate slot/charger for a spare battery (included).

I'm a flashlightaholic. The Nite-Ize units are nice. Streamlights are OK, but I break them too easily, so for what they cost, I stay away. I have been using Terralux stuff for a few years. They're cost effective, brighter than many others and my current Lightstar 300 has been bullet proof in daily use for about 3 years. If you want something bigger, I also just found a cheapo Duracell 1k lumen 4 "C" cell LED flashlight at Costco. It has a focusing beam like a Maglight, it will flat out blind you and it cost under $20.00 with batteries. (It IS made in China, though)

Toss in my op.
Milwaukee M12 5 or 6 yrs now. Cannot kill it in a shop environment. Dropped way too many times on cement floor and even into pans of coolant or oil. Did have to replace the switch, soldered in a radio shack toggle. Oh Remember Radio Shack?
The newer version I have at home is good slightly larger same light output.. Lot of good ones out there, but I have M12 tools so these both fit right in with the same charger.
The adjustable angle head is what I like best.

Really? I feel like my Stinger is the toughest light I've ever owned. Granted, I've never used it as a hammer, but it's certainly seen it's share of drops and bangs over the last 4 or 5 years in an auto shop environment.
I wear an LED headlamp almost all the time in the shop. Hands-free is awesome. Shop isn't lit well, and under-car is never going to be lit that well.
Sometimes my head is in a tight spot or I need better color/depth perception, and then I just use a regular ol' Mag-Lite D cell.

Second the Streamlight I have a Stinger and a Strion the Stinger is about 6 years old and have replaced the battery once. They both have been dropped from about 25' onto concrete with out any damage.
Charger is nice, keep it in the truck and always have a charged battery.
Fenix lamps are amazing for the price. I've carried one for edc for over six months and love it.

I've had several Streamlights. I had one I kept having to replace every 6-12 months when the power button would just quit working. I take care of my tools, it wasn't beaten up or dropped. After replacing it 3-4 times I finally dropped the coin on a Surefire Outdoorsman. I think I'm 2 years into this one and the only thing I've done is change the batteries twice.
Expensive but worth it.

I'm a big surefire fan. they actually have their G2X Tactical on sale right now for $40. It's yellow which would be great for a shop or glovebox

I own Strion LED (160lumens) but I saw this guy with Fenix, I like the quality. I would get a Fenix if I have to replace my Strion because it's a fraction of the cost.

I used to buy maglites I thought they were great. After awhile of twisting them to turn em on and off they got flakey and unreliable I even tried the LED version but same unreliable. I bought a Fenix PD35 (2014 Edition 960 Lumen CREE XM-L2 U2 LED compact Tactical Flashlight / searchlight with Genuine Fenix ARB-L2 18650 2600mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery) 'kit' thru amazon. A bit pricy but it comes with everything.. I love it. Super bright and always works. I've had it sense April and only charged the battery once.
