LED Panels

My projects getting close to wiring stage. So thinking about lighting. The Garage inside dimensions are 20' x 23' x 9' ceiling and have a 16 x 18 x 8' ceiling height after t-bar art studio underneath for the wife. Wife would like the LED panels for her studio lighting i picked up a Liteline LEDP-24-WH panel from the wholesaler as a sample. I Like the light she would like the the 2' x 2' panel lights installed in a checker board pattern. Anyone have any experience with these or similar?
I'm thinking of using them in the garage with flush mount kits.

LED panels are not very popular here, since they're typically about double the price per lumen than more vanilla 4' Florescent/LED tube type fixtures. You're basically paying for the looks.

That being said, I think it would be pretty slick.

That's an outstanding product, maybe the best one out there. Notice the little dip switches on the driver. They allow you to select the color of the light (CCT) and the intensity of the light, so she can choose however bright she wants them. They are also fully dimmable via 0-10VDC controls. Good choice!

Agreed they're not cheap. But sometimes especially with my low ceilings they won't be subject to getting hit when were swinging things around etc.
My project isn't cheap due to the suspended slab style of build so as a percentage of build cost the lighting still won't be that bad in my opinion.

reading your opinion makes me feel more comfortable spending the dollars on this product. I wired the sample one up temporarily and tried the different light colors and intensities. And we feel they will do the job in the art studio very well. In my garage they might be a little overkill price wise.
I'm building to the maximum Square footage i'm allowed in my area so smaller than i'd like so i think i'm justified in spoiling myself with a nice small garage. And really other than flooring and lighting its hard to go overboard on the building itself. Filling it up might be a different story.

There's probably a quality drop off compared to the sample you're considering but LED panels, or "troffers" are pretty reasonable on Amazon. You could use the fancy ones with variable color output in the art studio, and then less expensive ones in your portion of the garage.
I've had mine up for a few months, and have been pretty happy with them, although they can present some issues that a more traditional 4ft fixture wouldn't like insulating above them (see this thread for a pic, and details: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=369894)

I'm just about ready to install twelve 2' by 4' LED panels in my garage (drywall going in as we speak). Bought the surface mount kits which stand out about 3". They have a connection box on the back that qualifies as a junction box so I just have my romex sticking out of the drywall at each location.

Cant wait to see them on.

You can hang them on aircraft cable, creating a floating cloud effect that's pretty cool. There are also spring clips available that will allow you to surface mount them without using a surface mount frame kit, which is also pretty cool. Or, there's a mud-in kit available, too.

I am favoring the led tube option for two reasons: lower operating cost and Mostly safety. The fluorescent tubes can rain a glass-storm if bumped with a board, a ball, or anything else. No so with the led tubes.

I like the checkerboard idea.

I had similar concerns about hanging low, so I added some wooden framing, and secured rails for t-bar/drop ceiling to that framing. The lights should be flush with the ceiling when I get to that point. Nothing hanging down to get damaged, require dusting, or look "tacked on" rather than properly built in.

I am going to check with my wholesaler tomorrow if i can find the time to get in there about the surface mount clips cybrdyke suggested. If they are available north of the 49th i think that's the way i'd like to go.
It might help to cover up my ****** drywall ceiling finish i'm probably going to produce. Can't seem to finish ceilings as well as i do walls?

Got a link to the spring clips? The cost of frame kits can add up fast.

These spring clips are made for the Liteline panel mentioned above. There are so many different panels out there that are all slightly different. I cant tell you if these would work on anything other than the Liteline panel.

Has anyone tried these clips and had success? I'm working with these and the lights don't stay tight with the ceiling. With 6 clips they droop a 1/4" to 3/16".

No personal experience from me as the logistics of inserting a fixture with 6 of these clips always struck me as a very awkward process. Maybe they're intended for thicker drywall, thus adding shims above might help.
