LED potlights in single garage?

Hey folks ... seeking some advice. I want to get my garage walls mudded smooth and get some new lighting installed in my single car (220 sq ft garage). I had an electrician in yesterday and was discussing adding three small fluorescent light boxes and then he suggested LED potlights instead.

I'm interested but I am wanting to check on here if anyone else has done this (LED potlights specifically) and what they thought of how many are needed and what kind of cost is expected. He said the ones he uses have a diffuser of sorts so it is not the traditional direct light of normal LEDs. I believe that the electrician said they were about $220 each but fully wired and installed. Is that possible?

I would not be using the garage for any mechanic type work - it is more just a hangout space and poker room. I want the walls to be white, except for one of the long walls which is entirely exposed concrete. Also would like to eventually have a RaceDeck floor.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I have can lights in part of my garage with LED lights. The LED flood light bulbs are meant to replace the old incandescents. I do NOT recommend a special can light fixture that does not use a regular screw in edison base for the bulb.

The cans are regular off the sheld 15$ Halo units. The LED floods are CREE brand 65 or 75 watt equivalents. They make awesome light. Instant on, 11 watts, 3000K, about 10$,and a great flood pattern.

DOn't get a special LED can, get a regular can with an LED bulb.

Kevymach...$220 - installed? I guess that is reasonable there, but quite high here, unless there is distance/barriers to running the wire/switches and the potlights.

LED technology is still developing and I would hesitate installing lights that use non-standard bulbs/bases/modules. I have done some LED lighting for boats, several have a the "pot" style fixture, though the wiring is more difficult and if you don't mind the high tech color of the light the LED puts out, they can be quite nice.

I have 4 current "styles" of LED bulbs in my personal garage just to see how they perform and to experience the type and color of light they put out. I have the Cree that HB mentions, and a "utilitech" A19 style bulb, both are 3000degreeK bulbs, yet put out noticeably different light.

I am with HB...get a standard can/pot and find bulbs you like. Or go low voltage and get a "marine" fixture and LED.

$220 each is rediculous unless the lights are $100 plus each. I charge $85 for a recessed light installed and that's supplying the can, trim and bulb. If customer wants led trims I just have them pick out the style they want and purchase them so it's not in my cost. A airtight ic can cost $10. Unless the fixtures are a special can made for garages I would get some more estimates. Find out what type of cans he is using

I can recommend this LED I put one in at my moms and its really bright for only 10w.

It can retrofit existing recessed cans or be installed straight into a standard 4" box.

Its essentially a surface mount low profile fixture. Saves a lot of money since you don't have to buy the can. The instructions say its fine with insulation contact on the box.

UPDATE:

So in the end I got 6 LED potlights installed in the garage so here are some pics of the before and after. The before is with the one light (CFL) that is next to the garage door opener. The change is impressive with tons of light. Even more as I also had the contractors smooth out all the drywall and primer. All-in $2k plus the cost of the lights.
