anybody use any of these recessed LED fixtures for a paint booth setup? It seems like they would be good because of being sealed up and not generate much heat.

I have a couple LED spotlights and the finned aluminum heatsink on the back side of the bulb gets extremely hot.

As long as they are explosion proof they would be legal. They do get hot on the backside also like stated above.

Problem is you want "natural light" in a paint booth... big money is spent on nice booths to get lights correct to represent how the paint will look in the sun.

Oh and the direct light properties that are native to LED's is also not very good for a paint booth, you would end up with the areas directly under the light being brighter then other areas and would make it difficult to see some paints properly to make sure it will look great in the end.

If in a paint booth, you need good quality light.

LED lighting (especially the inexpensive stuff) is notorious for poor CRI.

CRI stands for Color Rendering Index - basically its a measurement of how different colors look under the light. A light with a poor CRI will make it hard to tell between colors or will make a color seem darker/lighter or even make it appear as a different shade.

The higher the CRI number, the better the light quality and the better that colors will look the same under the light as the do outside in direct sunlight.

Read all about CRI here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index

Make sure you look closely at the CRI rating of whatever LED lighting you are considering for this location.

Being the amount of light your going to need for a paint booth (120-150 cf) and explosion proof fixtures if your going to abide by the code, I would save the money and go with T-8s

"Most" paint booth fixtures are installed behind wired glass so they can use a normal fixture & not have to use a high dollar ( grab your chest, fall over, & die price) hazardous location fixture, the wired glass makes sense because there is a flat, vertical or angled surface, not a bunch of places where paint overspray can settle & accumulate.
