I think I found my new favorite hardware store. I've been casually thinking about work benches for a new space I'm tackling and ran across these cast iron legs from Lee. The...

Those legs are A+ nice, but I can't afford to spend $229 on a pair. I used to look at their catalog all the time but so many prices were out of my reach that I rarely do anymore.

Hell yes a work bench... Nothing looks better than "fancy stuff" that has been used HARD.

I have quite a few Lee Valley bits and pieces. When I'm in a city near one of their stores I always check in with the "discount" corner beside the order counter. I'm far more frugal than most, yet I find my money best spent at LV. However, that' not to say that I'll buy fancy new planes because they're pretty. I'll use my father's. But things like a striking knife are invaluable but not that expensive. I don't like their ruler stop but it works well on their ruler but I had to make some for other rules. And the list goes on. I also find that LV has stuff that noone else has and indeed stuff that belongs in the history books. But, sometimes you need that kind of stuff and you'll just have to bite the bullet and spend the bucks. I needed scrapers and nowhere could I find them except at LV. Be frugal, not cheap where frugality is the best path and you'll buy LV, sometimes.

Damn those things weigh 120 lbs a pair. I bet they make a damn stout work bench. I would say at least 100 times more durable than a Gladiator bench.

I got that too - a post about it will be posted on TG tomorrow.

BUT, I'm going to be out of town for a while, so I'll be unable to accept any orders. =(

I've owned a pair of these LVT legs for about 10 years. I keep finding new uses for them (just change the table top and, voila, new table). I've used it as a dining table and a workbench, though now it supports my big plasma. Every garage-guy should be getting LVT's catalogs.

The way I can afford to buy LV stuff: I buy the "close-out items" and when & then use the free shipping special. Can't beat that. I have gotten some fine tools and hardware from LV this way..

Just placed a healthy order last evening..

Also been a big LV fan from perhaps day one of their existence. They actually published their own woodworking magazine for a couple of years, until I think they found out how much work it was. They dropped it using the excuse that there was not enough input from the readers, which as anyone knows who was there..................they never asked for in put or said anything about the magazine being in jeopardy. Miss it, as it was written in that same informative style as their other material. (Woodcuts was the name and may still be available as back issues)

Be sure to get the hardware catalogue also, many things in there you cannot find elsewhere, and cheap. Maybe not that important to you guys in the U.S. but here it it sometimes difficult finding those little pieces easily and without a bunch of B.S. to go with it.

The originator, Leonard Lee has since retired and handed it over to son Robin, who is doing an admiral job of keeping up the tradition of offering interesting stuff.
