Time to join the cool club. Just need a basic set with the small sizes. Prefer USA made but don't want to break the bank, just a hobbyist.

Thanks

Any good name brand you like in standard twist will make the same in reverse twist. I'm assuming that you will be using these mostly for drilling out broken screws so I would recommend screw machine length bits in cobalt. This is not a job for dimestore bits.

I have had good luck with norseman, new and old. There were a few that complained but I have experienced nothing of the kind.

What will you be doing with the left handed bits? extracting bolts? If that's the case, I'd probably make it a set of stubby drill bits.

I'd just order from Mcmaster, or find a set of Viking on amazon, or any other name brand online.

The smaller 5pc Irwin 30520 set has done me fine for a lot of years.

I have the 5 piece Norseman set and I agree. I don’t encounter broken bolts too often but every time I have so far one of those 5 sizes was adequate for the job. I could see why a machinist would have an extensive collection but for a mechanic or general maintenance work I think 5 pieces is perfectly adequate.

I’m in Florida so perhaps a mechanic from Michigan would disagree.

Are the Drill Hog bits actually USA made? Yes USA is in their name, but I didnt see "made in USA." For the price, I'm sceptical.

I don't think they are. I made a thread about companies like this sometime last year. Seems like more and more companies are throwing "USA" into their name to deceive people into thinking the COO is USA. I'm sure having the giant flags on only the Warranty card and not on the actual packaging was intentional.

This guy on Utube who calls himself The Ultimate Handyman gets all sorts of broken bolts out with the left hand drill bits. Even those snapped off below the surface. Guy was freaking unbelievable in his success.

I looked on the webpage for them and there was no contact information other than an address.

The about us page doesn't mention country of production. I'm not recommending them nor buying from them again. I thought that the Amazon page (where I bought) had made in U.S.A. on the information.

So we can not prove or disprove it. Give them the benefit of the doubt !!

There was an Internet rumor floating around that they were buying large quantities of individual drill bits from Norseman. Once the received them the repackaged them into sets. I'll bet Norseman would give you a good price on 10,000 1/4" bits !

I order from McMaster Carr, 1/16", 3/32", 1/8" and 3/16" and keep multiples of each size.

These have handled 100% of the work I've done so far. If you happen to break one, you have another to continue the job, within reason. Not guaranteed with a set.

I like this approach. Broken off studs/bolts is already an OS moment so having consumable bits at the ready makes sense.

Why give the benefit of the doubt? I go the opposite. In my experience a product is clearly labeled "made in USA" if it is. You can put American flags on Chinese products, call it General Tso USA, but that means nothing. I have a newer Marson riveter, it has something like Marson, MA, USA cast into it. And made in Taiwan on the box- which I knew.

No way they're selling Norseman bits at a fraction of the price that Norsemans sell for. USA LH bits are very expensive; the equivalent Norseman set to this is $50+

Your local Autozone has them on their tool isle.

Brian

Personally I wouldn't buy these unless it's an emergency.

I may be picky, but they were dull and softer than I like. I sharpen every time I use them now.

I'm using them in a mill, not a hand drill.

Agreed. It's too much of a selling point not to advertise. If they're trying to say "USA" without explicitly advertising it as the country of origin, then they're probably trying to keep the COO on the down-low as much as they legally can.

The case says Made in USA. The bits say the size and HSS. The case is made by Huat and may be the only part that is made in USA.

I'd be surprised if the bits are USA at this price.

Apparently you have to register online for the warrant and there is a sticker on the case that says if it is missing no warranty.

I didn't buy them because of any warranty but that seems like a lot of hoops.

Thats how my new $2400 trolling motor is for my boat. Have to register it online and the unit has to have the serial number sticker still on it. Pretty standard practice from what I've found imo.

I agree, I doubt the bits are made in USA though.

I bought the Drill Hog bits and they were delivered today. Case says Made in USA...but maybe it's just a Huot case with Chinesium bits?

Since I have always found the spiral type extractors less than user friendly when in my hands, I went with this Norseman set with square bolt extractors. It’s machine screw length and with bits up to 5/16 it should be good on bolts up to 5/8.

It was $57.50 with free shipping.

Ok, I finally checked and my Norseman bits are marked USA in sizes larger than 1/8. So that ends the "internet rumor" these are repackaged Norseman - at 30% of the price. They might be good, but not Norseman, and I'd say 99% most likely not USA made. I'd bet they're just repackaged here - with added American flags :)
