Left Hand Drill Bits - Need Some

I have always wanted to get a *good* set of left hand drill bits. I need these for typically drilling broken bolts, which can be fairly hard. Using a hand drill since it is probably broke in the engine in the vehicle. No carbide bits that are too brittle for hand drill work. They need to be tough enough to withstand some misalignment.

Anyone have good recommendations for brand or sources? Thanks, Terry

Get a set of Norseman left hand bits. We use Norseman bits in our mould shop drilling in tool steel. They do a great job.

I've used the $8 set from Harbor Freight to take out 8-10 broken studs in blocks/manifolds/heads/transmissions.

I use'em with a pneumatic right-angle drill for getting into tight places while still in the cars.

nothing's broken yet. They're obviously not made of pure awesomeness, but for eight bucks, and the time they've saved, it was well worth it.

Another vote for Harbor Freight - I bought a set that came with the easy outs and I've done a lot with them, I haven't broken one yet and they still seem sharp.

They work pretty well in general too, a lot of times well before I get very deep in the stud it will back right out with the drill bit.

I like 'em!

I know the original poster was specifically asking about Left handed drill bits, but he did mention removing broken bolts and studs. I bought a set of left handed drill bits with an EZ out atatched to them from Sears for removing the broken studs on my 4.6 Ford motor and they worked great. I have had to remove many broken bolts and have used just about everything and these things worked great. A little pricey but cheaper than taking the Aluminum heads off and taking them in to a shop.

Exactly why I want the left hand bits, sometimes you do not even need the remover tool. I am planning to get some of the multi-spline extractors, as I have had the spiral removers break before and then you are F'd.

I dont know who makes them but i have a set from Matco and the work great. I use them for drilling the holes for my easy outs and half the time i dont even need the easyouts...the left handed bits pull em out.

Probably irwin, they provide most of the extractors for the trucks and sears. Bits should be made in brazil if they are new cobalt.

While the OP said no carbide, a carbide spotting/center drill might be just the thing for starting the hole....

Bumping an old thread. Need some left hand drill bits myself. Same as the OP, often end up breaking something off when working on an old car. Saw this set on Amazon -

I order individually from Enco anymore. I had a cheap index in 1/16ths from Northern, but they're not that durable & you just wind up stepping up or down a size 'cause you trashed the one you were using (you know who you are). You could get away with just ordering several of each size and jumping 1/8ths or even 1/4s
