I've got a couple of broken exhaust studs and I'd rather not use easy-outs since they always seem to break. Anybody know where to get a decent BIG kit that has all of the most common sizes?

Left handed bits are only used when the stub is loose in its threads, like broken off when installing. I doubt they'd be of help in your situation.

I use mine all the time when the fastener is tight. I figure if I am going to need to retap I need a hole to start from anyway. A lot of times the fastener does unthread even when it had been tight. Sometimes even after I have worked my way up in bit size as I usually start small and work my way up to tap drill size.

The only stuff I've ever broken and had to drill out was seized stuff. I never use Easy-Outs anymore. A lefty bit, like mentioned above, is how I go. I'd say 1 out of 4 I've got to Heli-Coil, the others come out.

To the OP, I'm not sure the manufacturer of my kit. It doesn't have as many as my right-turning kit, though.

I just ordered the Irwin left hand drill bit set and the Lisle 4 pc screw extractors.

I have never owned LH bits, now I'm LESS LIKELY to break a bolt.

If you have it available heat the manifold around the bolt first. Ive done this with much success and now if its off I do it and replace even with good studs to prevent breaking when tightening.

If you're trying to get some exhaust studs out of a type IV head that are broken, good luck. You're best bet is to weld a nut to them.

I broke just about all the studs on an exhaust manifold for a cat motor once. Alot of them had enough meat left for vice grips, a few snap clean flush. I have a snappy left hand bit extractor set. Very nice, wish i bought it a long time ago. drills have worked on everything i've thrown at them so far. the easy outs worked good too. A few of the studs I needed to weld a nut to, or weld a nub on so vice grips could grip.

Just remember to run your drill in reverse. I sold a guy a set and he came back ticked off. He claimed they were not good quality as they were burnt on the ends. After I questioned him a bit, he never reversed his drill and tried to use LH bits in a RH direction. Thats a OOOPS!
