I have a Lennox Elete 4 ton unit installed in 09 and the compressor went out. Do I replace the whole unit or just the compressor.

Before we tell you to replace the compressor or the unit, tell us more how you checked it.
How did you know that the compressor went out/died?
Did you check the capacitor?
Are the windings open or shorted?
Did you measure the resistance on the start and run windings?
Maybe it tripped the internal thermal overload.

I am Just a DYI er but I did check power on the load side of the contactor and I have power there. I found one overload with a reset button and that was not tripped. When I apply power there is no hum or any noise from the compressor, that is why I assumed it had died. I will call a pro tomorrow but I just wanted input from the forum

You need to answer bazar01’s questions (and more) before anyone could provide valuable input.

Lennox makes a pretty stout unit. Nine years really isn't that old for a well-maintained unit.

If it's an R-22 unit, I'd definitely try repairing it. If it's a R410a unit, I'd still consider repair. Probably should have a respected HVAC company come out and inspect things.

It is a 410A unit and came with a 5 year warranty. I would love to answer bazar01's questions but I lack the skill set to go any further on the unit.

There was another guy w/ similar situation and he deemed his system as dead, but that was anecdote. Those system/brand suppose to last 20-40yrs if installed/maintained properly.

It's ok. That's why questions were asked.

Now you know the info you need from the pro.

If it trips on thermal overload, you can try to hose down the compressor with water to cool it down (be careful not to spray on the electrical section). Then if you are lucky, the thermal overload which is located inside the compressor will reset.
But you have to have a gauge set hooked up to the unit before you turn the unit on so you can see how much charge is in the system.
The refrigerant charge level is important because the refrigerant coming back to the compressor is what's cooling the compressor to keep it from overheating and tripping the thermal overload.

Don't they come with a 10 year parts?

Normal warranty is 1 year parts/5 years on the sealed system (compressor, tubing, and coils). One could opt and pay for an extended warranty - usually 3 years parts and 10 years sealed system.
Anything other than that used to be at the discretion of the installing dealer, though just recently I heard of a 12 year warranty on everything.

Hi, You said you have an elite Lennox compressor supposedly die. Does your condenser fan work? This is an XC model? If so they have 10-year parts and compressor warranties. That would be XC17 and XC21 I am not sure if the XC16 falls into that. That's why u need to call a Lennox Dealer not any HVAC company. Now if this is an HS model then yes 5-year warranty

Just had the same thing happen to my 20 year old Lennox heat pump. R-22 system, I checked the compressor resistance, 0.25 ohm. Compressor shot. Well it served us well over that 20 years only one repair in that time- No refrigerant added at any service as far as I know. I confess though, haven't had it serviced in a long time.

House was up to 109! yuk. New system is being installed as I type this. Hopefully it will be as good as the one it replaced. Stayed with Lennox, got a XC20 5 ton heat pump. Used the Costco kiosk, but probably paid the "you need it now price"

Maintenance of HVAC is simple - hose down outdoor coil annually and replace indoor filter monthly (use 4” filter or cheapest 1” filter only)

That Lennox suppose to be the best and you should be able to control your humidity and temp independently -PLEASE CONFIRM. All of us can’t control the humidity level, it’s just a byproduct of setting the desire cooling temp.

Is it true that you can set humidity level independently from the temp w/ those new Lennox variable speed inverter units?

Yes you can. Just don’t set the humidity setting to low. The unit operates at 70% of the fan speed when dehumidifying. It’s the same fan speed that you will be using for 1st stage cooling since this is a 2 stage system. Did you go with the s30 icomfort or icomfort wifi for your tstat? Both do dehumidify the s30 has a feel like feature some like others don’t.

Yes- XP not XC- sorry about that. my bad-

They finished the install at 3pm and 12 hours later the house was finally cool- of course everything it it had been heat soaked for a week here in AZ.. Glad it's working. Quiet as all get out too.

The only issue we have so far is the thermostat clock is "automatically" set from the internet and has the wrong time- Going to call Lennox tomorrow and see if they can figure out how to get it to display the right time- We are in AZ where we don't observe DST, I suspect there is a bit of a firmware bug in the thermostat.

Bill- Sorry- I've been away from the computer a couple of days- Indeed it is the Black S30 I did figure out how to get AZ time on the display.

1. Disable internet access
2. Go into the menu where you set the time and click the DST off
3. Re-enable internet access

All is fine now and from what I can tell from my electrical usage, we're almost 20KWH/Day less energy usage than the old R22 system. I think this is right about where the salesman said it would be. So I'm a happy Lennox customer

No need for apologies I am getting ready to leave Poland and come back to the states. You did what I would of advised depending on thermostat. It’s a really nice system. That compressor you don’t even really hear humming.

Ohm the compressor and also check it to the case for a direct short. I bet a capacitor or contactor failed.
