I need something less aggressive than a wire wheel, but more than a buffing wheel. I’ve seen some flap wheels and some wheels made out of material similar to Scotchbrite but I can’t find anything local to put hands on them to see how they feel to me. What do you guys use or have experience with?

Have had good results with nylon drums in a "restorer tool". Look for "nyalox" nylon flap wheels or Eastwood has a "narrow scale stripping wheel" or a drum235c2f56764ffab2edd929c6136b353a.jpga1ff5635a89d504ce2acda7222ca5fd8.jpg

Look for the Scothbrite radial bristle brush. Macgee is making quite a stir on the vintage tool rust removal thread.

He starts at post 42, and following and following. I’m hoping he has stock, as his pix are winning lots of us over.

That's actually exactly what I'm using it for. I love cleaning the old tools from my wife's grandpa and from garage and estate sales. Its like seeing something come back to life. The results he posted are amazing, I need to get some of these yesterday.

I bought the Eastwood Contour CST tool that takes these narrow wheels. They work amazingly well. The tool with 4" drum is great for flat surfaces. I should have bought one years ago.
The narrow ones are perfect for my horseshoe artwork.

I tried them on a production grinder. It never got to the floor. We wore out the wheel before we finished testing the grind. It may last an occasional user a long time, but if you use it for regular grinding, stay with a brush.

I’m a home shop guy cleaning up old tools from my wife’s grandpa’s shop. So I’d like to think I could get some life out of them. But I know I’ve gotten heavy handed before and prematurely ended some wire wheels out of frustration and impatience.

:+1: for the 3M radial brush wheels. They come in several different grits.

Here is a 6 inch 220 grit wheel mounted on my old bench grinder.
