Less expensive alternative to Snap On midget wrenches?

I have really been lusting after these two Snap On sets, OXI709SBK and OXIM707SBK. I would like to have a high quality set of combination wrenches in my precision tools toolbox. But, these are darn expensive! Can anyone suggest an alternative? Maybe Armstrong 25-602 and 52-601? Thanks for any input you guys can give! I forgot to mention, that i have also been looking at the ignition type combo wrenches, and those may work. But, I don't want the cheap stamped looking ones, I would like a nicer set if I fo that route. Thanks again!

Personally I like SK stubbies for the size range SK offers, SAE up to 1" and metric up to 24". Don't laugh at a 1" stubby, they are handy!

Sunex makes a great set of chrome stubby SAE & Metric wrenches. SUN9930 &SUN9930M, I have sold both sets combined for about $75. Or for about double that, you could pick up ratcheting GearWrench sets but not as many pieces.

Many choices out there. Craftsman, Proto, S-K, Armstrong, Thorsen, GearWrench, Blue Point, Williams, Gedore, Val-Check, Stanley, Kobalt, Falcom, and many others all cheaper in price than snappy. A few of the brands mentioned above carry 2 styles full polished, and regular style.

Armstrong ratcheting stubbys. The ratcheting box end is even better for tight spots

Apparently no one read the OP's post, he is looking for MIDGET wrenches (tiny fastener sizes) not STUBBY wrenches

4-9mm

1/8" to 3/8"

He lists 2 sets from snap on one of them here

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...674998&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

and also mentions the fact that he is interested in ignition type wrenches.
The set above and the other that he mentions are in fact midget type wrenches.
And the wrenches mentioned by me, all carry those sizes in different sets.
Just sayin

I was confused about this as well. :headscrat

I don't use midget wrenches often, but my cheap Cmans work well for what I need. Stubbies are not as small, but may work in most applications.

I'm thinking that I'm going to complete my MAC sets down to 1/4" and 6mm (the smallest combo wrenches MAC offers). Then, I will buy the Snap Ons only in the tiny sizes. I'm not exactly sure why I want them, but I do. :headscrat I've gone my whole life without a 1/8" combo wrench.

Woops! I didn't check the SO part#s and figured he meant stubbys.

I shall retire to the dungeon from whence I came. :D

Tekton is what i use. Honestly you should never break a midget wrench. Its for getting into tight spaces not for strength.

Please, lets not use the phrase "midget wrench". Let's try to refer to them as little wrenches.

Stay far away from the craftsmans. They are really....messy. Seems they don't bother to file after stamping on the smaller sizes. The box end is not stamped on center....etc. etc.

Well, that's too bad. My older cmans are little jewels and I am real happy to have them.

I have a bag Armstrong wrenches that I paid $5 for from a flea market vendor. I'm happy with them for what they are.

Bringing this back from the dead - what are the good choices today for 4mm-7mm wrenches?

A lot of the stuff out there is stamped steel junk.

The problem with these small wrenches is that they do need to be made to quite tight tolerances to function well. Sometimes, although it seems a lot of money, you simply have to pay up.

Alternatives -

Facom No.39. Strictly speaking these are “short” wrenches rather than “midget”, but they are available down to very small sizes, nicely made, and reasonably priced.

Their No.22 midget open end might also be of interest. Also very nice, and reasonably priced.426E4807-6C7B-4DF3-8489-5F3BA8933979.jpeg

Elora offer midget open ends and midget combinations. I have a small set of these in BA sizes, but if I’d known these were so nice I’d have bought ISO metric too. Might still do so.

Most of the German makers offer midget open enders. Here are the Hazet.

4mm is basically 5/32 (3.97mm)
5.5mm is basically 7/32 (5.56mm)
If buying piecemeal is an option it may be easier to find high quality/reasonable prices in those SAE sizes if you're in the USA.

I have a chrome Kobalt long pattern 5.5mm 6 point that I really like. Longer than most.

Asahi Lightool makes a fancy set from 5.5-7mm.

In small sizes, below 8mm, I like a 6 point box end. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of quality and affordable options for this in the US; at least that I found. Armstrong made these in 6 point, but they're mostly gone now, even on Ebay- unless you want to spend $20 a wrench when they pop up. The problem with 12 point wrenches in small sizes, like 5-6mm, is that there is so much slop that I worry about rounding corners (edit- even on rustfree fasteners). VIM makes a small 6 point set, but it shares blanks between sizes, and is pretty underwhelming for the $. I pieced together a set one at at time, mostly Armstrong, mostly for a few $ a piece from Cripe. But the last few I had to pay $10-20 each for on Ebay from various sellers.
