Wow! Where are you at? We had some crazy storms here. We were without power for about 22 hrs. No tornado though. Just heavy winds. The house we moved from was in the close to the path of one (like by a block). Never been hit directly. Just got a home owners policy today for a place I'm moving into in a couple weeks. 2 car with a +1 on side! Rare for my price range. excited about the increased bit of space.

Well on the upside it's unlikely to ever happen again*... so at least you got that out of the way :)

*Based on that scene in World According to Garp where Robin Williams is looking at a house to buy when it gets hit by an aircraft & he says "We'll take it!"

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! Thankfully no one was injured. Hopefully the Cobra can be repaired, it stinks losing personal property to unpredictable events that we can't control.

post pics using the go advanced button and manage attachments to upload photos...try to resize before hand as the forum likes anything 800x600 pixels or less....too many pixels and we will have to scroll to see it all. Sorry to hear about your loss...especially the Mustang! Frack! You are going to insurance school...at least you'll know how to deal with that bureaucracy!

Sorry to see all the damage to your new home, but great you've got replacement cost insurance ! You can revamp most of the house on your insurances dime !

That's some serious damage! You might consider going back with a plywood/osb and shingle roof, not sure if there's a "next time" with weather, but imo with the solid deck, it would be more resistant to penetration. Shingles would get shredded for sure, but those are easily shoveled off and replaced in a couple of days.

Other than the glass, is the truck driveable? Sure its not great looking, but could be a nice "experienced" pickup for dirty jobs.

Are you talking osb/plywood and shingles on the outbuilding? My house roof had softball stones go through the roof as well... along with my detached garages and sheds.

Wow. When a town near here was hit by baseball sized hail, the cars that were parked in garages were undamaged. Unless there was a skylight, their roofs held up to the hail.

Imagine the updrafts that kept iceballs up in the air until they were that heavy.

You've probably heard it before, but there are crooked businesses which follow hailstorms and prey on desperate people. Be cautious.

Whoa. Man! You're lucky you didn't take one to the head. If that's what it did to the roof and then the car, imagine taking a shot off the noggin? Anyone get hurt, locally?

Keep in mind that a car is always covered by auto insurance, not your homeowner's. Even if it's inside a garage.

The other thing for GJ folks who have big garages or lots of tools, take a close look at you homeowners policy's limits for detached structures. It's often 10% of the home value. It CAN be adjusted; in my case, the 10% would have pretty easily covered the building, but not my tools, so I had it adjusted, and pay an extra premium to do so.

Oh man that hurts Brett.
I can't even relate to your loss. I have never experienced that type of thing.
Mother nature is cruel at times. We are waiting for the big one (earth quake) here in So Ca. have felt a few shakers but no real damage yet
Nice to know that you are covered by insurance Good luck

And welcome to the Garage Journal

Hey guy's. It's been a rough go so far. Our Insurance on the shop was only covered at 10% and I failed to see this in the policy. Cobra is getting fixed. I need to get it to a shop I trust. It needs a roof and they are taking care of all other damage. I need to pull the motor to have someone else go through it and make sure the water didn't cause any damage to the motor. (I don't know if it was noted but the valve covers timing cover and ect were all off for the new powdercoated parts to be installed)

Anyway... I am going to be fighting the insurance company and have an attorney to look over to see if there is a case. I understand the policy makes it so im screwed however... She failed to do her job and I even said that the shop I needed covered(it's large enough that you need to do so) also, she never tryed to make sure i was covered for the full amount which is her job. She never looked at the appraisal that was done and just did a generic policy which isn't what the place was in need of. Hopefully we have something that will get us what we need to recover some of the loss. I will keep everyone updated... Hopefully we will have better news soon.

I am going to hopefully get the cobra where it needs and will upload pictures of the property with everything as I go. Our contractor is hopefully going to come start working within the next week!!!

Those are some monster-size hail stones !! :scared:

Sad to say that best solution for truck is just get large insurance check as possible and "drive it ugly" until you wear the thing out.

I'd sure fix the '03 Cobra as it can't be as bad as pickup since car inside garage. Don't let them total it so it won't have salvage title.

Buildings need better siding than vinyl. I'd go with concrete hardiboard. For roof, I'd go with 5/8" PLYWOOD with full membrane underlayment before the composition shingles (Tamco Heritage or similar Owen's Corning).

Good luck fighting with insurance and make sure they pay for EVERYTHING that was hit with hail . . . . . window trim, gutters, air conditioner, pipe vent covers, etc.

Cobra isn't going to be totaled... they estimated like 4500 in damages as of now... however i know it will be more than that....

This is without the labor to pull heads off and reassemble the motor but still for a car worth mid 20s to replace we are looking good there. I am still bumped because I hate having to do body work to a 20k mile car but, it is what is.

As far as the insurance company they are coming back out to look at more damage then was actually intentionally noted. I am still working on the outbuilding loss that makes it very hard to justify not fighting. I found out we have connections to people who are in higher ups in insurance companies and even the Nebraska commission board for insurance... So hopefully they can assist too and the agent/insurance or someone will be step up and be willing to help so we can come to a settlement. i am not going to settle for what we are sitting at considering it shouldn't have meet my mortgage terms nor what we discussed on the phone.

Before you yank the motor out of your terminator, inspect for rust where you can and drain the oil. depending on what you find, it may be OK. coat everything with fresh oil to prevent any more rust.

The roof is a structural component, and a crappy job can leave the chassis tweaked. Spend time finding the right shop through referrals if possible. does the car have sub frame connectors? If not, getting them installed before roof is cut off would help keep things square.

Cobra is sitting on a fully built suspension setup with tubular everything car is far from stock.... built 8.8 and ect. The engine will not be toast however with everything else going on in life right now it's getting sent out to a performance shop to be inspected fully. I can do the work myself as I am a certified technician. I know a guy who will take care of me and I trust to do the work so that is where the engine is going. The body shop I still haven't yet decided but the car does in fact have sub frame connectors welded in also. It's always nerve wrecking having such a large repair done to a special car like this. If this was a daily I wouldn't hesitate but it's my dream car that I just payed off not to long ago and I had so many plans to build it to a whole other level. We will see what happens in the near future.

Insurance is still a joke. I am getting quotes for my outbuilding currently.... I have a bid from cleary in the process of, chief is coming out tomorrow, and morton has only given me for just the roof....
I trust my contractor however I need real life bids of what it's going to cost.

Long time since I have been on. Insurance progress really hasn't gone anywhere however, I was able to make thing's work how we wanted to since I am a bit handy myself.
I will post pictures of the property. We are happy with the process we are making and the end product's.

The most important part to many of us. Is the SHOP is being rebuilt as we speak. I was lucky to find someone who was able to bail me out a bad situation and help reskin the entire building for little compared to my other bids. It has been a slow process however, here shortly... I will be able to make the shop to how I wanted it and hopefully get to do a bit of an expansion on it shortly to fit a 2 post lift or two. :)
Stay tuned.
I promise the pictures are coming :)
