My flea find from yesterday is much more humble.
But puzzling!
Has anyone seen that number (or any similar number) underneath the "S-3" (or any other wartime handle part number) before?
You can see the long dash and "G" next to the branding, which is a date code practice and date code that usually indicates 1945.
But note how much larger the "3" in the "2253" is than the "225". Note also how the "225" is centered directly under the part number. It makes me very tempted to read that "3" as extraneous to the number and looking conspicuously more like a 1943 date code in that respect.
That would make it 1943 production that was re-stocked for some reason and stamped again. Not unprecedented, but not exactly common during wartime, either, or not as common as the 1929-1934 at the cusp of the Great Depression.
That makes the extra number "225".
Customer? Other? Thoughts? Other examples? I scoured all my WWII Snappy drive stuff and could not find any similar marking on any other piece, socket or handles.
I was happy to dig it out of a huge pile of miscellaneous tools on a table, making my efforts very much worth while, because I didn't have one, and I was happy to add it to my 1944 S-12 and my 1944 S-6.
Here's the group shot if only for markings context.
