What are some of you long time collectors opinions on the patina? I'm starting to try to assemble my specific collection of different tools in nice condition. Probably will replace the K4 I don't like that scrape mark but I can't decide on if it's something I should take off or wait to find better ones. I always thought that you just couldn't find certain things with no patina or whatever else until I started picking up some like this Craftsman set with a BE ratchet which are notorious for turning that grayish color that was uncleaned for the most part and unused for the most part and looks nice and shiny. Some pictures here to show what I am referring to.
Side note I know I'm certainly taking it beyond a reasonable point but I gotta do something to stop buying everything I can find ha

Just found this in a box of tools that I was given by a friend that's had to go into a care home. He taught me lots about working on cars. Can't see a date code any ideas.20231001_113118.jpg20231001_113046.jpg
I can't help on the date of the ratchet, but playing the GJ game of 'guess what else is in the picture' : Is that a Land Rover chassis crossmember held up by a glimpse of a Discovery jack?:cautious:

I always preferred natural patina to wirebrushed or acid dipped. It is personal preference: do as you please. Do stop by my house before you stop buying. It might be mutually beneficial.

I use a little hoppes 9 and a light scrub will brillo pad at most but still doesn't feel quite right. We got shipping services ha definitely not ideal but if you ever wanna trade or sell stuff like that I have piles and piles of tools mostly snap on.

Nice, especially for free. If you find a source for slides, let us know, as I need a pair for mine.
I am considering ball bearing conversion, just not sure I want due to cost. Already spent a day degreasing, dismantling it and ultrasonic the wheels and hardware.
A couple of the lower slides would have to be drilled out and only one side of one drawer would need to be replaced if there were replacements. It has had a really hard life, rescued from a trailer tank shop at the edge of the scrap pile.

It seems like a 1/2 inch per side. I just used a tape. I will check again if really commit to this. Would be nice to have soft close on it as well. I am considering painting it white as well to make it more modern.

Mystery socket in this 7/8 drive set anyone got any ideas? It's not marked supposedly but can't confirm 100% until it comes in the mail. Also not sure on this drain plug socket marked C 5/8

Some big stuff not all snap on but crazy how even the 5/8 is dwarfed by the 1 inch drive and everything dwarfed by that big ratchet thing.

I found a really nice No. 359 Ford Feeler Gauge in a house liquidator's lot at the flea yesterday.

Blue-Point 359 closed.jpg

The guy was definitely working on Fords, as the detritus of his old boxes included some FoMoCo and K.R. Wilson tools as well, posted here.

It was first introduced in 1937...

Blue-Point 1937.jpg

...and the last time it appears in a catalog is 1948...

Blue-Point 1948.jpg

...and that happens to be a nice, spittin' image match for mine.

Here's a view where all the markings on all the leafs are visible.

In most all the BP tools, the arrows, in the logo, are gone in the early 30s. its odd to see them in the late 30s. I have a few of these with the same logo as this one.

I'm glad you said that. It was in a decent size haul, with a variety of tools, and you know what that's like. Up before the dawn, first pass with a flashlight, and then, after you've made the rounds and you're all loaded up, catching your breath and another cup of coffee before you hit the road, you're a little foggy, and by the time you're in your car and headed home you can't remember everything that's in the back. I swear to god, the whole way home I'm thinking it was a Blue-Points. Because of the arrows. I was a little disappointed to see that I had misremembered when I hauled everything into the house. Then I perked up again thinking it must be unusual.

That is a nice set. Herbrand also made a Ford set. I’m not aware of any other brand.

Besides both being 1/2" drive, these 2 ratchets surprisingly have something else significant in common.

Funnily enough, I do not have many vintage Snap-On tools. Most of my vintage stuff came from my stepfathers dad who was a diesel mechanic from the '50s through the early '80s; the majority of what I got was Plomb/Proto, Mac, Cornwell, and Williams.

I do have *some* vintage S-O though.

The Torqometer (TQ-150) was inherited, as was the little 3/16 x 7/32 box-end wrench. The MT-540 is a recent addition, and it works perfectly.

Would the Snap-On tools all be 22** numbers and the Walden all have 34B**** numbers?
Hi Jock. I only know of 34#'s for the ratchet, 2 extensions, a universal, and a little crossbar like the 2254 snap mom posted above. The Snap on tools in the service tool kit were mostly 22XX but there were some others... lots of people have the 2140-29 head manifold L wrench. ( the 29 is NOT a date code).

I have some 25xx numbers also.
Do you have a list that goes in this kit?

This narrowly avoided scrap iron bucket today by virtue of having original box and paperwork. Smudge on paperwork was loose dirt, wiped off after picture. Bet the original soft goods pretty rare!
