Hi all. I just found this Snap On 7/16", deep socket. The markings read; Snap On STM-14.E made in USA. Looks pretty old, but how old? It is attached to a Wright adapter at the moment. Can't get them apart!
Thanks

It’s likely that your socket was made in 1944 and was part of the #488 Super Service set. If you found it in Malta it probably arrived there during WW2.

I collect WW2 tools and have run across quite a few with the “E” date code indicating that it was made in 1944. I went to the Collecting Snap-on site and did a search on your part number. The fact that it appeared in the 1945 catalog confirmed my suspicions. I hope that helps.

Here's the octo grip screwdrivers I have. One of the smaller straight drivers was lost and the #2 phillips was worn out and replaced. All were purchased in 1962

Picked up half of an F-7 rat today. The good half at least.

The few interesting but previously well loved pieces picked up yesterday.

-The F-7 ratchet again, after some scrubbing. 1928 date stamp on each side of the head.

-A Ford carburetor valve wrench S-9031. 1933 stamp. Think I narrowed it down to 1933-1936 in the catalogs. Cat says for use on the carb jet and gas valve. The pins are broken on one end. The cross handle doesn’t appear to be removable like the cat says, due to a stop ball on each end.

- Cotter pin puller S-9094-A. No Snap On stamp or date code, marked Non Rep (Non Replaceable). Looks like it had a little brazing repair to hold the hook.

Yep, plenty of uses for them.

A little comparison of the vintage to a later model S9094B dated 1999.

Later models have the 90 degree handle, not sure when that started. The hook ends look pretty much the same. The older one is longer in the long section and shorter in the short.

Picked a Blue-Point tool up today. Carbon-scraper, right? Looks cad-plated. 1930s-40s?

1936 f70n. Only the second one I have seen from that year. Both have a larger logo than later ones.

Correction, my 37 also has the larger logo. The others here have the later small logo and run 39 to 46...

The 36's had flat selector switches with screws, later the screw was changed to a pin

Found these in a leather tool bag that I found in my dad's belongings. The sockets have the overstrike SO that, as I understand, dates them to 1923 or earlier. The drive tools have the Snap On name on them. The extension is so rusty that I can't find a name, and it was used in the deep dark past as a drift so is damaged. Not sure if it is Snap On or not. I would be most interested in info regarding what I have here. Is it a set from the same era or ?

Should I clean the rust off with EvapoRust or leave them be?

Thanks!

That's a car specific kit. Some came in a metal box, but the leatherette was common. Do you have the leather roll? That breaker bar looks like the 1926 version. Maybe a mixed set.

Clean them. Rust is not considered a desirable patina in the antique/vintage tools market, and if you decide to keep them as a keepsake, they will look better displayed in a well-maintained condition. It doesn't look like cancerous, pitting rust, so they should clean up nice. Apply paste wax or WD-40.

Hi Oldtuleguy - the leather toolbox was not a tool roll - it was a large carry tote the size of a tool box. There was no trace of an original tool roll. Thanks for the info!

Hi Nutz - I'll give them a dunk in the juice and see how they come out. Thanks for the advice!

Extension bears the shape of an early snap on extension. They are stamped around the cylinder side of the extension.

Thanks R! Too bad it's beat up - like I said it was used as a drift - the socket is driven down on the shaft and the end of the shaft is collapsed on the detent ball. *sigh*

I'll look for a stamping once I get it cleaned up a bit.....

No worries pretty neat stuff. They are surprising some what common to see these. Most people do not know the snap on stamp and usually can pick them up in the dollar bins at the fleas. The 4pt sockets are a bit more rare.

Here is a 1923? Or so set. Note the logo on the extensions....(first pic) and the ell handle is the pre 26 version.

Wow Oldtule, that's great! My dad would only have been 10 years old in 1923. From what my dad told me, his family were poor as church mice so I can't see my grandfather having purchased a set like that. I'll never know where this stuff truly came from or who purchased them. But they are interesting conversation pieces, and neat old tools. Thanks!

Oh well. Here is their largest set from about same year. Had 1/2" and 5/8" drive tools in one case

Some odd aircraft? tools. 2252 and 2241. The 2252 is also stamped S6E, so probably 44. the 2241 has no other model number, it is a 7/8 with a holes for a bar. I think these go in a set, but never seen one. They do not have Made in USA stamped on them, but neither do most all of the aircraft tools from this era. They are not hard to find. There are probably more, so if you have any other 22** tools post them.
