I’ve had this wire stripper hanging around in my garage for a while. It was missing several screws including some tiny ones. I was showing it to my neighbor and he said that he thought that he had some screws that would fit. He brought it back the next day completely repaired. I forced the bottom ratcheting screwdriver on him. I really didn’t need three.

I believe that you need to make 5 text only posts before the site will allow your attachments.

Also be sure to use "Post Reply" rather than "Quick Reply".

Who can identify this without running to the 1936 catalog like I did? :)

I found a Snap-On 3/8 drive 12" extension yesterday. It was never chrome plated, and although pretty black, it seems to have been rusted enough that the identification is hard to read.

It seems to say "F-10-G1" but the zero is pretty damaged. It should be a F-12 if the number corresponds to the length.

Because of the finish, this should be an industrial or WWII product. Does anyone think it is WWII?

It is the top extension in the attached photo. The long extensions are 20".

I picked up this K-21 MechaniKit at the flea market this morning. These were made from 1935 to 1946. All the catalogs say grey enamel, but I am 100% positive this green finish is original. While not OD, per se, I think it's wartime. The removable top tray has the most wear and tear. The handle, which is cracked, had a flat steel bar taped to it. I'm going to have to repair that.

Here's the embossed marking (see Pic 1) and you can also see where the oval sticker used to be (see Pic 2). The clasps are made by Eagle Lock Company (see Pic 3). I was surprised to see the Stanley Sweetheart logo on the hasp (see Pic 4).

Thanks, J. It is a thoughtful configuration. Like a small top box from a stack, but portable.

I'm still trying to figure out when it was made. According to the catalogs, they added slides to this box in 1941. No slides on mine, yet green, not grey.

As for the restoration, I am going to replace the leather handle first. It's amazing how that changes the entire overall appearance of an old box. I am definitely going to preserve the original paint. There are some surface rusty areas I am going to apply some rags soaked in Metal Rescue for careful amounts of time, and three or four areas that will need grinding and sanding, I am afraid. Those I plan to touch up with some matching paint. And the entire removable tray needs paint, which is fine, because I have to braze the cracked handle. It looks like it probably had too much weight in it one too may times and lifted. But I am going to leave the other blemishes and wear spots. It will look better showing its age. And I will top that effort off with a reproduction oval sticker. Hopefully the eBay guy that Otg and d42jeep and others patronize will have one.

Lugz, that box looks great. I'd only seen the one pic you posted in the garage sale thread. Nice box!!! What a find! I was wondering if you were gonna braze that tray handle and you answered above. Do you have a replacement handle for the toolbox or have you taught yourself how to make these anew?

I have got the handles on ebay, by finding a non snap on donor box, and asking the seller to just sell me the handle with hardware.

Did you see how heavy this thing is? 33 lbs - empty! I can't imagine the strain on the handle with it loaded.

My modern one is quite heavy, and more so when loaded with tools. They're way too heavy to pick up using only the top handle unless only loaded with fly fishing hooks or something like that! I removed the top handle years ago and stored it, and just use the side handles.
I can only move mine around the farm (for instance if i have to work on a machine by taking tools to it) by removing the top tray and taking that, then coming back for the rest of the box. At least when it's all full and locked shut it's too heavy for anyone to move easily.

I usually find replacements by cannibalizing good handles off **** boxes bought at the flea market. But right now I am out of those so I will be on the lookout. I did re-wrap and re-sew one with new leather by hand for my Precision-Bilt box. You may have missed that restoration thread, linked here. Scroll to post #8 and #9 for shots of that process. I am considering doing the same with leather salvaged from an old catcher's mitt. The handle is good. Just lost its leather wrapping. We'll see.

Yup. My source is typically flea markets though.

The early boxes didn't have side handles. Believe it or not!

Back then, men were men, and tools were lighter!

Yea. I reckon they just used to dig their fingernails in under the edges!

I had a look at these boxes through some old online catalogues, sure enough in 1935 it says the tray holds Ferret and Midget cases, the 1939 one says 'Bottom drawer has a sliding tray for Midget units'.
That's quite a neat arrangement, I'm tempted to make up a sliding tray to hold my little 1/4 drive set in the same way.

the master set from the mid 30s has a slot for the midget set, also has a slot for the ferret set on the back, this is quiet heavy too.

Very nice. Definitely a rare ratchet.
I did pick up a thread worthy addition that I will have to post up tonight.

Does anyone have any info on this box. KRA145 date code 1962 size 15-1/2 x 4 x 1-1/2.
I think it is military.
