I've been searching a number of hot rod forums and have seen all sorts of '60s and '70s Rat Fink style stuff but it's not my cup of tea. I want to do a mural on one wall about 20' long and looking for ideas. I'm sure that some of you out there have a collection of "stuff" that you like to show off. Interested in just about anything from lead sleds to muscle cars to exotic improrts. Maybe an old gas station scene of some sort?

Thanks!

Sorry I don't have any pics now since I'm still framing, but I'm planning on doing one wall of my toybox in either a single or crossed checkered flags. I'll have ~24' of bare white (or light silver) wall from the end of my workbench to the entrance wall of the toybox. I like the simplicity of the single waving checkered flag, but a set of flags crossing at the 12' mark ~4-5' off the floor with a Phoenix (I'm a F-body fan) behind/over it would look pretty damn good too!!! It would be a similar pattern to a Harley Davidson flag/decal.
The back wall directly behind the lift and workbenches would be neon signs and posters and such.

If you are wanting to do a mural, see if you can find someone that has an overhead projector that you can borrow. Then any pic that you find, you can copy it to "transparency sheets", blow it up to any size with the overhead projector and Bingo Bango.....

My garage "art" used to consist of swimsuit posters but those came down since being with my fiancee, they dont look all that great no more. So the only thing left up there is a map of a local trail system BEFORE the govt stuck thier noses in and shut 90% of it down to trucks..... YET industry still gets to go where they please.... go figure. Make responsible users the criminals when its industry doing all the enviromental damage???

I was at the Goodguys Rod & Custom Nats in Columbus, OH last weekend and there was a vendor offering murals of everything from a country road scene to gas stations, diners, and drag racing. They had a 50's drive in theatre mural with a plazma TV where the movie screen was and they were showing vintage flicks. They will even take your photo and make a mural. Looks like most run around $400. I picked up a flier, so here is the contact info.

Thanks for the replys! I'm actually planing on doing the art work myself, but need to see some ideas. I will likely use the over head projector method for the basic layout for car, building, etc. but most will be free hand with an air brush.

How about showing some of the framed prints that you have. Never know where the inspiration will come from.

John Z where did you get the Woodward Ave. sign hanging on the wall? Having grown up in Detroit and living there most of my life before moving south the sign has meaning and a lot of memories from the 60's.

I decorated mine with original 60's Chevrolet dealership posters and signs... this worked fine when the garage housed a 69 Camaro and a 70 Yenko Nova, but now the Camaro has been relegated to the basement garage and a 32 highboy roadster sits beside the Nova, so I will be re-decorating one side with Nostalgic "hot rod" stuff in the near future, not exactly sure what that mans, but I'll know it when I see it. Personally I think looking for, and organizing garage "decorations" is the most fun of my entire garage build! Here's a couple shots of what I have now:

I think I found something that might work for one of my walls. I can blow this up to about 3' x 8' and put in on one side wall that is about 20' long. What do you think?

I was born and raised in Birmingham, and spent MANY nights on Woodward in the late 50's-early 60's; have made every Woodward Cruise since it started - got the sign from "The Sign Guy" at the Woodward Cruise years ago. :)

The sign guy will put anything on a sign that you can come up with or order from hie catalog at Thesignguy.com or call 1-888-374-4648. Signs are on heavy gauge metal like old street signs used to be. For something really unique for garage wall decoration visit garagescenes.com for fantastic murals at a fair price.Choose from their selection or they will work with you off of a photo.Met a couple of nice ladies that were presenting these at Barrett Jackson this year and have one planned for my garage in the future.

Still have not started on my wall mural, but have run accross some more possibilities.... first is painting the wall with a big logo like the one shown in this old shop photo. Really like the brick look in this one.

Next two are just cool pieces of art that could be easily blown up and painted on the walls.

Here's some pics that someone posted on a Mopar forum a few years ago. I saved them in case I could use them as inspiration in the future. :D

Now we're talkin'!!!
I have much respect for people that can airbrush like that.
I can do almost anything with a straitedge and pencil, but I'm 100% worthless with a paintbrush.

Where did this picture come from? I need a better version or possibly an original, I am a HUGE Homer fan and this would fit in the office nicely.

I found it on the Jalopy Journal Board here, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ in one of the Friday Art Show threads. The artist goes by Jigger on the board and has lots of cool stuff almost every week. I would imagine that he could get you an original or a high res version. Just don't have any clue what he would charge.

Thanks for the compliment SteveL in Saint Louis! you'll have to take a picture of your wall should you deside to go with the Homer pic. I'm really bound by contract not to give away Simpsons art work even when I'm just doing it for fun, like this one, so, everybody, this is our little secret, shhhh!

That is about the coolest website ever if you love old car pics. Stayed up late last night and am up early again this morning looking!:)

Me too, I looked at it for about two hours yesterday & I'm back at it today!:bounce:

Have you seen the spots on that car site with the old car crash pics? Not that I take pleasure in seeing wrecked cars, I think it's just interesting seeing them as an everyday car on the street with a boo-boo...before 'crumple zones' were even a thought. :)

Oh, and another thing, All my work is copywritten. I am interested in talking to anyone interested in purchasing or contracting for original artwork but, PLEASE, do not "take" stuff just because it's there. Thanks!

Makes me wonder how may people got killed in some of those crashes. Even in some of the minor crashes you can see the windshield cracked where somebodys face hit it. Maybe seatbelts and air bags aren't so bad after all.:)

Yeah, I got thinking the same thing, after viewing more of those.:(
I also realized how much safer our overpasses, bridges, lane dividers & etc. are today than they were back then. That's a plus for sure.:D

The crashes that cracked me up were the ones involving 'shine runners & bootleggers.
